Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of perception of importance of patient safety management, patient safety culture and safety performance on managerial performance of hospital nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used, with a convenience sample of 393 nurses from seven general hospitals. Data were collected through self-evaluation questionnaires. The data collection period was April and May, 2016 and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN 24.0 program. Results: There were significantly positive relationships (p<.001) between hospital managerial performances and perception of importance of patient safety management (r=.36), patient safety culture (r=.51), safety performance (r=.44). Factors influencing hospital managerial performances in the hospital nurses were identified as patient safety culture (β=.34), type of hospital (advanced general hospital) (β=.31), and safety performance (β=.20). The explanation power of this regression model was 39.0% and it was statistically significant (F=183.82, p<.001). Conclusion: The results from this study can be used to develop further management strategies for enhancement of hospital managerial performances.

The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of perceptions regarding the importance of patient safety management in the relationship between incident reporting attitudes and patient safety care activities for nurses in small-and medium-sized general hospitals. The objective was to provide a basis for planning tailored training programs aimed at improving patient safety care activities. Methods : This study was conducted with 187 participants in small-and medium-sized general hospitals in K city in South Korea from March 15 to March 31, 2019. The data collected from participants were analyzed using descriptive statistics, a t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and a multiple regression using IBM SPSS/WIN 21.0 software. Results : Patient safety care activities were found to be correlated with incident reporting attitudes (r=.27, p < .001) and perceptions of the importance of patient safety management (r=.59, p < .001). Further, perceptions of the importance of patient safety management had a complete mediating effect (β=.409, p < .001) on the relationship between incident reporting attitudes and patient safety care activities. Conclusion : Based on the findings of this study, tailored training programs regarding patient safety care activities focused on boosting perceptions of the importance of patient safety management are highly recommended to improve nurses' patient safety care activities in small-and medium-sized general hospitals.

Nurses’ Knowledge, Attitude, and Fall Prevention Practices at South Korean Hospitals: A Cross-Sectional Survey

Background: Fall-prevention activities are nursing interventions which are designed to improve patient safety. The introduction of evaluations of medical institutions and an increase in medical litigation has led institutions to emphasize the importance of fall-prevention activities. The current situation regarding falls among patients in small and medium-sized hospitals is poorly understood. This study examined fall-prevention activities in small and medium-sized hospitals and assessed knowledge and attitudes regarding falls of nurses working in these hospitals. Methods: Participants were 162 nurses from seven small and medium-sized hospitals. Data on participants’ characteristics, education regarding patient falls, knowledge of stretcher cart use, attitudes regarding patient falls, and fall-prevention activities were collected from August 1 to September 1, 2016. Results: Nurses’ experience with patients falling was positively correlated with knowledge. Length of nursing experience and attendance at education sessions influenced attitudes regarding patient falls. Attitudes positively correlated with fall-prevention activities, but knowledge did not. Nurses’ attitudes regarding patient falls were correlated with fall-prevention activities. To ensure engagement in fall-prevention activities, hospitals should develop incentive programs tailored to each hospital’s specific circumstances and create attitude improvement programs based on nurses’ subjective norms. Conclusion: In short, we recommend that consistent, repeated, and custom fall-prevention education should be implemented in small and medium-sized hospitals to promote engagement in fall-prevention activities. Patient safety activities in small and medium-sized hospitals can be enhanced by creating an environment which encourages voluntary and self-directed participation in fall-prevention activities using motivation and rewards.
