The available literature on balance mountings is reviewed and the mountings are broadly classified into the four groups: independent pillar, floor, bench and wall mountings. The basic theoretical and practical requirements are considered under the aspects : suitable location for the balance, design of the mounting, damping requirements and surrounding bench or work table. Some of the important points are illustrated with examples from the authors' experience. Attention is drawn to the importance of giving early consideration to the vibration isolation requirements when planning a new laboratory, and to the absence of data on the permissible levels of vibration for balances.
