A comparative study of tissue glue and vicryl suture for conjunctival and scleral closure in conventional 20-gauge vitrectomy

Abstract: Aim To describe the use of tissue glue to close scleral and conjunctival wounds, and to compare the clinical outcomes using tissue glue and vicryl suture for closing these areas in conventional 20-gauge (G) vitrectomy. Methods Thirty eyes of 30 patients were included in this study. The indications for vitreoretinal surgery were diabetic vitreous haemorrhage with severe vitreoretinal traction in 10 eyes, retinal detachment and proliferative vitreoretinopathy in 14 eyes, and vitreous opacity in 6 eyes. Tissue gl… Show more

“…Third, the coagulation time of fibrin glue can be controlled during surgery by controlling the thrombin concentration, and its rapid coagulation could shorten the operation time. Recently fibrin glue has been studied for many ophthalmic uses [2-11], including scleral closure in cataract surgery and pars plana vitrectomy [26,27]. …”

“…Na + /K + ATPase participates in the turnover of cations important for the polarization/depolarization of the apical part of the RPE membrane upon receiving photons by photoreceptors (Marmorstein et al 1998(Marmorstein et al , 2000Marmorstein 2001). The third ion exchanger, MCT1, is responsible for the symport of H + -lactate and water and thus has an important role in maintaining intracellular pH and water homeostasis (Batman et al 2008). Elevated levels of BEST1, Na + /K + ATPase in our cultured RPE cells determined by gene and protein analysis (WB) demonstrated a highly polarized state of our epithelial monolayer.…”

“…Sutureless surgery avoids irritation of ocular tissues and is, therefore, the most popular method to prevent IOP. To close the incision of the sclera and conjunctiva, fibrin glue was used, first in a 20G vitrectomy (1), and subsequently in 23G and 25G vitrectomies (2). No incision leakage, adverse effects, or low IOP were observed during the postoperative follow-up.…”
