A Comparative Study of the Cracking Effect of Induced Joints of Various Spatial Formations

Abstract: The use of induced joints is a common cracking control measure used in the design of roller compacted concrete arch dams. Currently, in some projects in which radial twisted joints were used, during the construction period, some cracks appeared around the induced joints while the joints themselves failed to open. From the fracture mechanics point of view, this problem is related to the variations in the spatial formation of the induced joint planes. In this study, we formulated numerical examples involving squ… Show more

“…Numerical simulation [10][11][12][13] and observational investigation [14][15][16][17] are the two most representative methods for analyzing the macroscopic performance of concrete dams involving fractures, considering the dimensional inconsistency between laboratory experiments and practical engineering. With the incorporation of extended fnite element method (XFEM) [18][19][20], virtual crack closure technique (VCCT) [21][22][23], and cohesive interface elements [24,25], a series of computational methods have been proposed to reveal the service conditions of concrete dams in jeopardy cracking. Wang et al [26] combined the XFEM and the fnite volume method (FVM) to simulate the hydraulic fracturing (HF) process in high concrete dams, and engineering application verifes that the hybrid approach is an efcient tool for HF simulation in concrete dam.…”
