“…At 6 K, the measured saturation moment is 21.58 m B mol À1 or 7.19 m B by Gd mol. This last value is slightly higher than that calculated g J J ¼ 7.00 m B (g J is the Landé factor and J the total angular momentum) for Gd 3þ ion but is comparable to that reported for the binary compound Gd 3 Ni (7.21 m B by Gd mol) [6] or the ternary silicide Gd 6 Ni 5/3 Si 3 (7.10 m B by Gd mol) [7]. A similar excess in the saturation moment was previously reported for the silicides (Gd x Tb 5Àx )Si 4 [14], this excess was thought to be due to the contribution from the gadolinium 5d electrons resulting from the charge transfer between Gd sites and their neighboring ions.…”

“…These data suggest that Gd 5 Si 4 as Gd is an interesting candidate as magnetic refrigerant in the vicinity of room temperature. Moreover, the antiferromagnet Gd 3 Ni (T N ¼ 99 K) which has the highest Gd content among the compounds existing in the GdNi system, is considered as a potential magnetic refrigerant material [6]. Considering these studies, it is interesting to investigate the magnetocaloric properties of the ternary compounds existing in the Gd-Ni-Si system and rich in gadolinium (50% or more in order to minimize the inactive thermal mass of solid).…”

“…In this series Gd 3 Co exhibits antiferromagnetic transition at T N ¼ 128 K with a really large value for the magnetic entropy change (À11 J/kgK for m 0 DH ¼ 5 T [23]) whereas for GdCo 2 and Gd 12 Co 7 ferromagnetic transitions are observed. The magnetic entropy change of Gd 12 Co 7 is two times higher than the one of Gd 6 Co 4.85 for m 0 DH ¼ 2 T and this may explain why a small amount of Gd 12 Co 7 is very well seen on the DS m curve when the starting composition is Gd 4 Co 3 .…”

“…Recently the magnetocaloric effect and magnetic properties of Gd 3 Co and Gd 3 Ni were examined [7]. For these compounds the saturation magnetic moment per Gd ion calculated from the low temperature isotherms were 7.04 and 7.21 μ B , respectively.…”

“…A strongly anisotropic behaviour of the magnetic and transport properties was observed. Moreover, there is a large difference between the values of the ordering temperatures (T C = 334 K for Gd 7 Pd 3 and T N = 140 K for Gd 7 Rh 3 ) and also in a type of the magnetic ordering for both measured compounds, which crystallize in the same type of the crystal structure with the same c/a ratio of 0.63. Also, the complex character of the temperature dependence of the lattice parameters of the Gd 7 T 3 was observed [5].…”
