In this study, we designed and investigated pHresponsive nanoparticles based on different ratios of monomers with primary, secondary or tertiary amino groups. For this purpose, copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with different compositions of amino methacrylates (2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), 2-(tert-butylamino)ethyl methacrylate (tBAEMA) and 2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride (AEMAÁHCI)) were synthesized using the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization process. The controlled nature of the radical polymerization was demonstrated by kinetic studies. All copolymers show low dispersities ( -D M < 1.2) with amino contents between 9 and 21 mol %. For the nanoparticle formation, nanoprecipitation with subsequent solvent evaporation was used. All suspensions were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Different initial conditions of the formulations resulted in differently sized nanoparticles that have monomodal size distributions, relatively narrow polydispersity index (PDI) values and positive zeta potential values. The pH-stability test results demonstrated that, depending on the structure and amount of the amino content, the obtained nanoparticles reveal a reversible pHresponse, such as dissolution at acidic pH values. The ability of the nanoparticles to encapsulate guest molecules was confirmed by pyrene fluorescence studies. The cytotoxicity assay results showed that the nanoparticles did not have any significant cytotoxic effect.

Polystyrene (PS) particles carrying pH- and temperature-responsive poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDMA) hairs (PDMA-PS particles) were synthesized by dispersion polymerization. The diameter, diameter distribution, morphology, chemical composition and surface chemistry of the particles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental microanalysis, dynamic light scattering and zeta potential measurements. The hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity balance of the PDMA could be tuned by varying both pH and temperature and therefore these sterically stabilized particles acted as doubly stimuli-responsive stabilizers for aqueous foams by adsorption and desorption to/from the air-water interface. At and above pH 6.0, in which range the PDMA hairs were either non-protonated or partially protonated, particle-stabilized foams were formed at both 23 and 55 °C. The foam prepared at 55 °C was the more stable of the two, lasting for at least 24 h, whereas the 23 °C foam destabilized within 24 h. SEM studies indicated that the particles adsorbed at the air-water interface as monolayers at 23 °C and as multilayers at 55 °C. At and below pH 5, in which range the hairs were cationic, hydrophilic and water-soluble, no foam was formed irrespective of temperature. Rapid defoaming could be induced by lowering the solution pH at both temperatures, due to rapid in situ protonation of the PDMA hairs, prompting the PDMA-PS particles to desorb from the air-water interface. The foaming and defoaming cycles could be repeated at least five times.

AbstractThe Cu(0)-mediated reversible deactivation radical polymerisation of N,N'-dimethylaminoethyl acrylate in DMSO and IPA at ambient temperature using Cu(0) wire is investigated. Tetra-functional and octa-functional initiators were utilised to facilitate the synthesis of well-defined PDMAEA star homo and block copolymers with a range of molecular weights (Mn ~ 5000-41000 g mol -1 ). Both solvents demonstrated to be excellent media for the controlled polymerisation of DMAEA yielding narrow molecular weight distributions (Ð ~ 1.1) when the reactions were ceased at ~ 40% conversion. Interestingly, at high conversions (typically > 55%) high and low molecular weight shoulders were evident by SEC when DMSO and IPA were used respectively, suggesting large extent of termination and/or side reactions at prolonged reaction times. Nevertheless, high end group fidelity could be maintained when immediate precipitation of the polymers (at lower conversion) was performed yielding low dispersed P(DMAEA-b-MA) star block copolymers (Ð < 1.19, Mn ~ 20000 g mol -1 ).Importantly, guidelines on how to prevent hydrolysis, termination and side reactions of PDMAEA as well as how to purify and store such materials are also provided and discussed.
