Estimation of the infiltration/natural recharge to groundwater from rainfall is an important issue in hydrology, particularly in arid regions. This paper proposes the application of The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) mass balance model to develop infiltration (F)-rainfall (P) relationship from flash flood events.Moreover, the NRCS method is compared with the rational and the Ф-index methods to investigate the discrepancies between these methods. The methods have been applied to five gauged basins and their 19 sub-basins (representative basins with detailed measurements) in the southwestern part of Saudi Arabia with 161 storms recorded in 4 years. The F-P relationships developed in this study based on NRCS method are: F = 39% P with R 2 = 0.932 for the initial abstraction factor, λ = 0.2. However, F = 77% P with R 2 = 0.986 for λ = 0.01. The model at λ = 0.01 is the best to fit the data, therefore, it is recommended to use the formula at λ = 0.01. The results show that the NRCS model is appropriate for the estimation of the F-P relationships in arid regions when compared with the rational and the Ф index methods.The latter overestimates the infiltration because they do not take λ into account.There is no significant difference between F-P relationships at different time scales. This helps the prediction of infiltration rates for aquifer recharge at ungauged basins from monthly and annual rainfall data with a single formula.

The flood peak is commonly estimated using the rational method for the design of hydraulic structures. The method is mainly used in a deterministic context. However, there is often uncertainty in flood predictions, which should be incorporated in the design of mitigation schemes. This research proposes a methodology to cope with uncertainty in the rational method via the application of a stochastic framework. Data from 158 storms, recorded in the period 1984–1987 in 19 subbasins in the southwestern part of Saudi Arabia, were used to implement the proposed methodology. A tri-variate log-normal probability density function was used to model the joint relationship between the rational method parameters. The model considered the parameters as random variables. The uncertainty in the rainstorms was represented by intensity or depth; the uncertainty in basin delineation (due to the use of different digital elevation model resolution) was represented by the basin area; and the uncertainty in the land use/land cover was represented by the runoff coefficient. The Monte Carlo method was used to generate realizations of the peak flow and runoff volume with 95% and 99% confidence levels from the input parameters. Although the correlation between the parameters was weak, the model was capable of simulating the rational model parameters and estimating the peak flow and runoff volume relatively well, and the generated realizations fell within the confidence levels, except for a few marginal cases. The model can be used to generate peak flows and the associated confidence limits in ungauged basins from the statistics of the input parameters using the equations developed in this study.

The issue of Land Use (LU) change has received considerable critical attention because it is one of the most significant factors caused by human activities worldwide. Recent critical changes in this direction have affected urban hydrology. LU change affects water resources and hydrological characteristics such as runoff and urban flooding. The development of LU causes a rapid increase in impermeable surfaces, increasing the flooding rate. LU also plays a vital role in extending water drainage, groundwater intrusion, and flooding during and after rainfall. This paper aims to investigate LU change impacts on runoff and urban flooding. This review focused on most articles, conference papers, and book chapters published in SCOPUS, including Google Scholar. The study was limitation to the last published from 2017-2021 and also extended some published theories for different years published. In addition, in the short and long term, the development of LU affects the environment, and most factors are involved at a catchment level. However, there is a strong relationship between human activities at the catchment level and runoff. The study concluded that LU strongly influences topography and the landscape in arid, semi-arid, and humid zones. This is why runoff and water distribution happen in urban areas. Furthermore, this study found that builtup area is a critical factor that increases urban flood risk, especially in lowlands along floodplains. It is common for the frequency of floods to become more severe due to a rapid increase in impervious surfaces brought on by urbanisation, increasing runoff. The review concludes that runoff affects by catchment size and its condition. Finally, humans can be reduced runoff and flood risk with a sensibility strategy.
