Skuteczne usuwanie płytki nazębnej jest podstawą zapobiegania próchnicy zębów i chorobom przyzębia. Wybór szczotki i stosowana technika szczotkowania zależy od stanu zdrowia jamy ustnej pacjenta, umiejętności manualnych i indywidualnych preferencji. Przy wyborze szczotki dla pacjenta należy kierować się jego wiekiem i sprawnością manualną, podatnością na próchnicę, obecnością ubytków niepróchnicowego pochodzenia oraz stanem przyzębia. Cel pracy. Celem pracy jest porównanie skuteczności usuwania płytki nazębnej za pomocą dwóch miękkich szczotek z różnym kształtem części pracującej. Materiał i metody. Badaniem objęto 50 osób (32 kobiety i 18 mężczyzn; średnia wieku: 23 lata), które podzielono na dwie grupy i przydzielono im szczotki Colgate ® Slim Soft™ (grupa I) i Curaprox™ Soft (grupa II). U badanych oceniano płytkę nazębną po wybarwieniu za pomocą wskaźnika RMNPI (Navy Plaque Index) zmodyfikowanego przez Rustogi et al. przed dwuminutowym oczyszczaniem zębów i po nim. Osoby badane oceniły ponadto komfort szczotkowania zębów. Wyniki. Oczyszczanie zębów przez dwie minuty wykazało w grupie I efektywniejsze niż w grupie II usunięcie płytki nazębnej z obszaru stycznego (52,0 vs 42,0%) i z całej powierzchni (57,0 vs 53,0%). Obszar przydziąsłowy był natomiast lepiej oczyszczany w grupie II niż w grupie I (68,0 vs 59,0%). Obie badane szczotki uzyskały akceptację badanych. Wnioski. Badane szczotki o miękkiej twardości włosia skutecznie usuwają płytkę nazębną (Dent. Med. Probl. 2016, 53, 1, 83-88).Słowa kluczowe: płytka nazębna, szczotka do zębów, wskaźnik RMNPI. AbstractBackground. Efficient dental plaque removal is essential in preventing dental caries and periodontal diseases. The selection of toothbrushes and a tooth brushing techniques depends on the oral health of a given patient, their manual skills and personal preferences. Patient's age, manual dexterity, susceptibility to decay, occurrence of noncarious lesions, and the periodontal state should be taken into consideration when choosing a toothbrush. Objectives. The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of dental plaque removal with the use of two soft toothbrushes of different head shapes. Material and Methods. The study involved 50 people, including 32 women and 18 men at a mean age of 23. The subjects were divided into two groups and they were assigned Colgate ® Slim Soft™ (group I) and Curaprox™ Soft (group II) toothbrushes. Dental plaque was assessed in all patients with the use of the Navy Plaque Index (RMNPI) modified by Rustogi et al., before and after a 2-min-long tooth brushing. Aim:The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of different bristle designs of toothbrushes and the periodontal status among patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment. Materials and methods:This randomized controlled trial (RCT) consisted of 45 adolescents (comprising 20 males and 25 females) undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment. The study participants were randomly allocated to three groups, each group being assigned a locally available toothbrush with a particular design of toothbrush bristle. In the first test phase, group I study participants were allocated to toothbrush with flat bristles, group II study subjects were allocated to toothbrush with zigzag bristles, and group III study participants were allocated to toothbrush with crisscross bristles. The study participants were recalled after 4 weeks to check the effectiveness of the allocated toothbrushes. A washout period of 1 week was maintained to ensure that there was no carryover effect of the different bristle designs. In the second test phase, each patient used the opposite toothbrush bristle design (group I: toothbrush with zigzag bristles, group II: toothbrush with crisscross bristles, and group III: toothbrush with flat bristles). Plaque scores were measured using Turesky-Gilmore-Glickman modification of Quigley-Hein plaque index (PI). Effectiveness of Different Results:In both phase 1 and 2 of this RCT, toothbrush with crisscross bristles exhibited maximum plaque reduction among the three different bristle design toothbrushes following 30 days (p = 0.312 ± 0.102 and 0.280 ± 0.110, respectively), which was statistically significant. Conclusion:It was concluded that all the three designs of toothbrushes were effective in removing plaque in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. But among the three different toothbrushes, toothbrush with crisscross bristles showed the highest mean plaque reduction.Clinical significance: Plaque accumulation around the orthodontic brackets and gingival margins is quite common among the fixed orthodontic patients, who encounter difficulty in maintaining good oral hygiene. Specially designed toothbrushes are very essential for effective plaque removal among the patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment.
