A comparative study of orthokeratology and low-dose atropine for the treatment of anisomyopia in children

Abstract: Myopic anisometropia (anisomyopia) is a specific type of refractive error that may cause fusion impairment, asthenopia, and aniseikonia. It is sometimes severe enough to reduce the quality of life. Several studies have investigated the treatment effects of orthokeratology (Ortho-K) and topical atropine on anisomyopia control. However, no study has compared these two interventions simultaneously until now. The cohort of this retrospective study included 124 children with anisomyopia who were treated with binocu… Show more

“…51,52 Moreover, appropriate asymmetric optical manipulations by orthokeratology were found to reduce the degree of anisomyopia in children. [53][54][55] It is possible that such treatments differentially affect the magnitude of choroidal thickening. 13,14 Orthokeratology treatments have been shown to increase ChT in a period as short as 3 to 4 weeks, [56][57][58] and this effect was sustained over the 1-year treatment period.…”

“…Orthokeratology is a particular type of contact lens prescription that is commonly utilized by a majority pediatric ophthalmologists to facilitate the control of myopia progression [30, 31]. Furthermore, recent retrospective research has determined that orthokeratology is beneficial in minimizing the inter-ocular difference in AL in myopic children, owing to a stronger retardation impact on axial elongation in the more myopic eyes [32, 33]. However, poor compliance and intolerance to their use for younger age groups can result in the treatment becoming difficult to maintain over time.…”

“…Hence it was suggested that Ortho-k might be a better choice in reducing the degree of anisomyopia and the progression of myopia. 2 Depending on how the twin sisters respond to low dose atropine, the Ortho-k or combined treatment strategies could be tried during the subsequent visits, as the twin sisters are at risk of developing further retinal complications due to pathological myopia.…”
