A comparative study of eubacterial communities by PCR-DGGE fingerprints in anoxic and aerobic biotrickling filters used for biogas desulfurization

Abstract: Biological desulfurization has proven to be a process that is technically and economically feasible on using biotrickling filters that can be performed under aerobic and anoxic conditions. However, microbial communities are different mainly due to the use of different final electron acceptors. The analysis of microbial communities in these systems has not been addressed with regard to the anoxic process. The aim of the work reported here was to analyse the eubacterial community in the two types of bioreactor a… Show more

“…Microbial sludge samples from the SZ and AZ of the MOHR were collected to determine the microbial activities of SRB, SOB, AOB and DNB involved in biological sulfate and nitrogen compound removal processes at the end of the experiment. Na 2 SO 4 , Na 2 S 2 O 3 , NH 4 + and KNO 3 − served as substrates for analyzing SRB, SOB, AOB and DNB respectively . Furthermore, a specific methanogenic assay (SMA) was performed to analyze the activity of acetoclastic methanogens belonging to the order Methanosarcinales (MSL).…”

“…The H 2 S concentration in the biogas stream was measured using a gas chromatograph with a thermal conductivity detector (GC-450, Bruker, Germany) and a specific gas sensor (GAsBadge®Pro, Industrial Scientific, USA) was used for H 2 S concentrations below 500 ppm V . Sulfate, nitrite and nitrate were measured by a turbidimetric method (4-500-SO 4 2− E), a colorimetric method (45000-NO 2 − B) and by an ultraviolet method (4500-NO 3 − B), respectively [17].…”

“…In biological processes the most widely used and studied microorganisms belong to the group of bacterial chemotrophic species, which use reduced sulfur compounds as an energy source and use oxygen (aerobic) or nitrate/nitrite (anoxic) as electron acceptors [3,4]. The biodesulfurization of biogas involves the use of technologies that facilitate appropriate contact between the gas and the liquid.…”
