A comparative study of dermatoglyphics in subjects with hypodivergent and hyperdivergent growth patterns

Abstract: Aims and Objectives:Dermatoglyphics is the study of fingerprints. Fingerprints are unique for an individual person. This aim of this study was to note if any correlation exists between dermatoglyphics and growth patterns.Materials and Methods:Lateral cephalograms of 100 patients were recorded and traced. Mandibular plane angle was measured according to Steiner's analysis to determine the type of growth pattern and thus separated into two groups (50 in each group): Group I being horizontal growth pattern (HGP) … Show more

“…While Nivedita Sahoo 12 found that there was an increased incidence of whorls in the horizontal group and loops in the vertical group (which is similar to the results found in the present study), the study failed to have a detailed inclusion criteria for the selection of subjects. The skeletal relation of the subjects hadn't been mentioned and the average group pattern had not been studied.…”

“…In the field of orthodontics, many studies have been conducted to assess the relationship between dermatoglyphic patterns and sagittal malocclusion. However, currently, only two studies 12,13 have focused on the relationship between dermatoglyphic patterns and growth patterns of individuals. Both these studies had low sample sizes and had not clearly defined the parameters of the study.…”

“…The terminology “Dermatoglyphics” has been derived from Greek “derma” meaning skin and “glyph” which means “carving.”[ 1 ] Cummins and Midlo coined the terminology “dermatoglyphics” in 1943. The ridged or friction ridges on the skin are present on palmar and digital surfaces (palmar and digital prints).…”

“…[ 9 ] Whorls can be classified as (a) simple whorls: these are formed by sequential concentric rings or whorls; (b) spiral or double whorl: this pattern is constituted by ridge patterns in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction; (c) central pocket loop pattern: this pattern comprises a loop within a smaller whorl, whereas in the “arch” pattern, the epidermal ridges cross from one edge to another edge of the digit. [ 1 ]…”

“…'Concentric whorls' are sequence of concentric ridges that are arranged as simple whorls while a 'spiral' or 'double whorl' has a central core with a clockwise or anticlockwise orientation. [ 8 ]…”
