A Comparative Study Between Diode Laser Cyclophotocoagulation and the Ahmed Glaucoma Valve Implant in Neovascular Glaucoma

Abstract: There was no significant difference in the success rate between the DCPC and AGV implantation in neovascular glaucoma treatment. However, DCPC is less time consuming and easier method for lowering IOP in patients with neovascular glaucoma.

“…In a study by Yildirim et al, 66 patients with NVG and visual acuity of hand motion or worse were randomized to AGV or transcleral diode cyclophotocoagulation [69]. A minimum 24-month follow-up was available for 58 of the 66 patients.…”

“…Patients with any of these risk factors may benefit from alternative nonincisional therapies such as transscleral diode cyclophotocoagulation, which does not have an associated infection risk and has shown to have similar outcomes at 2 years compared to AGV in patients with NVG and preoperative visual acuity of hand motions or worse. 16 Surgery selection and perioperative treatment should be based on patient characteristics influencing visual potential, wound healing, and known bacterial colonization. …”

“…TSCPC with and without the use of anti-VEGF has been shown to be effective in lowering IOP and relieving pain in advanced cases of NVG 99,100 . When compared to AGV implantation in a randomized controlled trial, no significant difference was found in the success rate at 24 months between the diode cyclophotocoagulation (61.18 %) and AGV valve implantation (59.26 %) in NVG treatment 101 .…”
