Objectives Pharmacopuncture is considered a unique new type of acupuncture in Korean medicine (KM). This study was performed to investigate the research trends regarding pharmacopuncture through a bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer. Methods The Web of Science Core Collection was searched for this study. The search terms were pharmacopuncture and pharmaco-puncture. The search was conducted on May 23, 2023, and 185 studies retrieved up to this date were included. Software VOSviewer version 1.6.19 was used to perform the bibliometric analysis. After data clearing, keyword co-occurrence and cooperation pattern analyses were performed. Results The number of studies on pharmacopuncture have gradually increased since the mid-2000s, with the most published in 2020 (46 studies). The quality of the studies has also steadily increased, and recently, several randomized controlled trials of pharmacopuncture have been conducted. Moreover, this treatment has been investigated in the context of KM clinical practice guideline development in Korea. The scope of pharmacopuncture studies to date seems to be limited to musculoskeletal pain and bee venom pharmacopuncture. The researchers from Jaseng Medical Foundation have been the core researchers in the field of pharmacopuncture in Korea. They collaborated with researchers from universities or government-funded research institutes. However, small-scale research teams from KM clinics and university researchers were also identified as independent clusters. Conclusion Pharmacopuncture research has grown both quantitatively and qualitatively, but the scope needs to be further expanded. There is also a gap between the use of pharmacopuncture by KM doctors in clinical settings and pharmacopuncture research. Based on these findings, some suggestions for future studies in this field are discussed. Furthermore, these findings may be used as data to expand and globalize pharmacopuncture research in the future.

A case report of traditional Korean medicine treatments on uterine myoma with thyroid cancer

Uterine myoma is a common benign tumor. When the symptoms are not severe, patients are often suggested to wait for menopause without treatment. If the size becomes too large or the symptoms get worse, the patient will receive surgery or hormone therapy. If a patient does not receive surgery or hormone therapy because of the waiting period, traditional Korean medicine (TKM) treatment can be applied. This is a case of a 47-year-old woman who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and uterine myoma. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2012 and uterine myoma in 2013. She had not received treatments. In December 2017, the size of the uterine myoma increased to more than 8 cm, and the patient suffered from dysmenorrhea, urination frequency, and vaginal discharges. She wanted TKM treatment instead of surgery or hormone therapy. From January 16, 2018 to April 12, 2018, she received TKM treatment; herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, and pharmacopuncture. Before the treatment, the urination frequency was more than 10 times a day, but decreased to 6–7 times a day after treatments. Dysmenorrhea decreased from VAS8 to VAS5 after treatments. After menstruation, the duration of vaginal secretion persisted for 3–4 days, but after treatments, it was visible only for a 1 day after menstruation. Ultrasonography showed that the thyroid cancer did not worsen and the size of uterine myoma decreased by 2 cm. It is considered that TKM treatment, as a substitute for surgery or hormone therapy, will exert positive effect on uterine myoma without the aggravation of thyroid cancer.

Carthami Semen Pharmacopuncture Combined with Electroacupuncture on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Retrospective Case Series Study

While carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment neuropathy affecting the wrist, resulting in substantial physical, psychological, and economic effects, there is no gold standard therapy for CTS. In this case series study, we aimed to report CTS patients treated with Carthami Semen Pharmacopuncture (CSP) and electroacupuncture (EA) showing improvements in their symptoms, and the combinatorial effects of CSP and EA. We collected medical records of CTS outpatients who received CSP and EA at Chuk-u Acupuncture & Moxibustion Korean Medicine Clinic from August 2017 to September 2018. The outcome measures were the visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, paresthesia, the Korean version of the Boston carpal tunnel questionnaire (K-BCTQ) score, and changes in nocturnal pain, Tinel sign, and Phalen’s test. We included patient satisfaction at the completion of all treatments. 17 patients were included for this case series study. After treatment, VAS for pain decreased significantly from 50.41 ± 16.19 to 9.59 ± 9.46, VAS for paresthesia also decreased significantly from 63.50 ± 11.49 to 14.75 ± 12.97, and K-BCTQ symptom severity scale decreased from 2.48 ± 0.68 to 1.89 ± 0.70 (all p < 0.001). Nocturnal pain, Tinel signs, and Phalen’s test showed improvements after all the treatments. All the patients reported favorable overall satisfaction with the treatments, and 69.23% wanted future pharmacopuncture treatments if CTS recurred. No complications were detected. The combination of CSP and EA could be an effective and safe option in treating CTS.
