In this study, the pure and Cu doped CdO thin films with various doping concentrations (0 to 5 at.%) were deposited on soda-lime glass substrates, using the chemical spray pyrolysis technique. The effects of Cu doping on the structural, optical, and electrical properties of thin films were, then, investigated. The films were characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with an energy dispersive x-ray analyzer (FESEM-EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and electrical resistance; van der Pauw techniques were also used to measure the Hall effect. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the thin films were polycrystalline only with cadmium oxide phase with the cubic face-centered crystal structure and the preferred orientations were along (111), (200), (220), (311), and (311) planes. The FE-SEM and AFM images also showed that with an increase in Cu doping levels, the grain size and surface roughness of the thin films decreased from 472 to 38 nm and from 163 to 54 nm, respectively. The expected element compositions were confirmed by EDX. The optical bandgap of the thin films ranged from 2.42 to 2.56 eV, and as Cu dopant increased, so, too, the optical bandgap. As the Cu doping concentration increased from 0 to 5 (at.%), the electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient were found to increase from 3.74⋅10− 4 to 8.77⋅10− 3 Ω.cm and 8.28⋅10− 6 to 2.52⋅10− 5 v/k (at 100 Co temperature difference), respectively; the carrier concentration and carrier mobility were also found to decrease from 3.24⋅1020 to 1.76⋅1020 cm− 3 and from 55.5 to 4.05 cm2/v.s, respectively. The Hall effect and thermoelectric studies revealed that the films exhibited an n-type conductivity.

The development of low‐cost, high‐power lithium‐ion batteries requires durable anode materials that can store and release lithium quickly. Here a mixed phase of H‐Nb2O5 and M‐Nb2O5 (denoted as d‐H,M‐Nb2O5) that demonstrates excellent performance as an anode material for lithium storage is reported. Experimental and computational analyses reveal several salient features of d‐H,M‐Nb2O5. First, the edge‐sharing arrangement between the mixed niobium oxygen polyhedral block structures helps alleviate volume expansion during cycling, thereby enhancing stability and reversibility. Second, the mixed‐phase structure facilitates a continuous pathway for lithium ion adsorption These characteristics allow for sequential transport of lithium ions, enabling fast charging. As a result, the d‐H,M‐Nb2O5 electrode material exhibits a high capacity of 142 mAh g−1 at an ultra‐fast charging rate of 100 C, while maintaining 85% of its initial capacity after 5000 cycles. Moreover, its practical feasibility is established by demonstrating full‐cell performance at a 5 C discharge/charge rate (13 mA cm−2), maintaining 79% of its capacity over 1000 cycles.

Copper oxide is one of the original semiconductor materials employed for solar cells in the early 19th century before Silicon solar cells became popular due to their abundant availability, and eco‐friendly nature. The optoelectronic parameters signify its huge potential in solar cell devices, though it's far from the theoretically predicted performance, provides tremendous scope to improve the solar cell performance by forming different heterojunctions. In this study, we investigated the copper oxide's (CuO) potential as an active layer in thin‐film solar cells theoretically with a new structure consisting of a Glass/ITO/Graphite/CuO/Ni. Furthermore, the charge carrier's generation rate and theoretical thresholds for photovoltaic device efficiency were determined for varying active layer thicknesses by employing a normalized light intensity equivalent to that of the AM1.5 spectrum. The optimized performance of the simulated structure by considering realistic optical parameters of the solar cell was ~24%, obtained for the 500 nm CuO films. The performed theoretical work can help to employ CuO and boost the performance of solar cells experimentally.
