A comparative histological study of odontogenic keratocysts in basal cell naevus syndrome and control patients

Abstract: 164 odontogenic keratocysts from 60 patients with the basal cell naevus syndrome were compared with a similar number of single keratocysts matched for age and site. Significant differences between the two groups were found in the numbers of satellite cysts, solid islands of epithelial proliferation and odontogenic rests within the capsule, and in the numbers of mitotic figures in the epithelium lining the main cavity. An index of activity derived from these parameters suggests a greater growth potential in syn… Show more

“…This is similar to Woolgar et al's [7] study in which they compared the ages of patients with sporadic KCOTs with those occurring in the NBCCS. They observed a single peak at 10-30 years of age with a mean age of 26.2 years in syndromic cases.…”

“…5 and 6) were uncommon in this series. The reported frequency of satellite cysts in odontogenic keratocysts may range from seven percent to 33.3 percent (5,13,15,16) while epithelial rests were found in 13.5 percent to 60.0 percent of odontogenic keratocysts (4,6,13 both these structures are regarded as indications of the proliferative capacity of the lining epithelium and a higher frequency of these structures had been reported in odontogenic keratocysts associated with basal cell naevus syndrome (19).…”

“…Dekade auf; es sind jedoch auch mehrere Fallberichte über eine Entstehung zu einem früheren Zeitpunkt in der Literatur zu finden [11,46]. Von Woolgar et al [83] konnten deutliche Unterschiede zwischen Zysten bei NBCCS und einzelnen Läsionen bei sonst gesunden Patienten festgestellt werden. Manchmal wird auch eine verzögerte Zahnentwicklung beobachtet.…”
