A comparative assessment of different dispersing aids in enhancing magnetorheological elastomer properties

Abstract: In this study, three types of available processing aids; namely naphthenic oil (PTO), light mineral oil (MO) and epoxidised palm oil (EPO), were used as a dispersing agent to investigate the effects of physicochemical and viscoelastic properties of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs). EPO was selected as the natural-based processing aids, and its morphological, magnetic properties, mechanical and rheological properties of EPO based MREs was compared with the petroleum-based dispersing aids such as light MO an… Show more

“…However, as CI contents increased, tensile strength and angle tear strength of MRE decreased. Aziz et al [ 74 ] studied the effects of dispersing agents such as naphthenic oil, light mineral oil, and epoxidized palm oil on MR rubber based on NR. Compared to conventional petroleum-based dispersing aids, these eco-friendly dispersing aids, also increased mechanical properties such as MRE’s magnetic behaviors, tensile strength, and elongation at break.…”

“…In addition to general rubber products applied in the automotive sector, such as tires or other specialty rubber products, rubber composites in the form of sensors, magnetic and electromagnetic field protection materials have been proposed in recent decades. For this kind of requirement, a new type of rubber composite with non-conventional filler as an integrated active component is required [15]. One way that this can be done for this purpose is to prepare a new material with a specific filler such as magnetic particles.…”

“…They consist of an elastic matrix, (i.e., natural/silicone rubber, etc.) in which ferro/ferrimagnetic nano/microparticles [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] and additives [9][10][11] are dispersed. In a magnetic field the elasticity state and electrical properties of MRE can be sensibly changed due to formation of aggregates inside the elastic matrix.…”
