A comparative analysis of major clinical outcomes using drug‐eluting stents versus bare‐metal stents in a large consecutive patient cohort

Abstract: Our risk-adjusted event-free survival analysis indicates a prognostic benefit for DES utilization that sustains up to 5 years following PCI.

“…Drug‐eluting stents (DES) effectively prevent intimal re‐proliferation after stent implantation compared with bare metal stents; therefore, they significantly reduce restenosis and associated adverse cardiovascular events such as cardiac death and myocardial infarction . However, DES with durable polymer (DP‐DES) was proven to be responsible for persistent vascular wall inflammation and markedly delayed endothelialization; this led to an increased risk of late or very late stent thrombosis , and consequently, a prolonged duration of double anti‐platelet therapy .…”

“…Drug‐eluting stents (DES) are superior to bare metal stents (BMS) in restenosis prevention ; however, their safety as assessed mainly by the incidence of stent thrombosis (ST) remains a concern . Consequently, newer DES strive to improve vascular healing while inhibiting the physiological repair processes that are common to any foreign implant .…”
