A comparative analysis of computer-aided design team performance with collaboration software

Abstract: With the restriction of the diameter and feed direction of the cutting tool in milling process, electric discharge machining (EDM) is the only effective machining technology for the uncut regions with internal sharp corner. Automatic design of the electrode is of great significance for the CAD/CAM integration of EDM technology. In current CAD/CAM system the electrode design is done manually by technologists based on experience and knowledge. The procedure is tedious and timeconsuming. In this paper, a novel ap… Show more

“…For the purposes of this study, a theoretical sampling approach called Polar types sampling is used. The objective of this approach is to observe contrasting patterns in the data in a simpler manner by sampling extreme (e.g., very high-and very low-performing) cases (Eisenhardt and Graebner, 2007). Therefore, out of 14 design teams participating in the design project course, two of the best-performing teams, as well as two of the worst-performing teams were further analysed for the purposes of this paper.…”

“…Some of these studies focused on differences between individual designers and design teams using synchronous CAD. Eves et al (2018) conducted an experiment using Siemens NX 8, focusing on efficiency, emotion and communication. A related study focused on emotion by Zhou et al (2021) using Onshape.…”

“…A limited number of previous studies have aimed to investigate collaborative CAD teams, some even using synchronous collaborative CAD tools. Eves et al (2018) developed their own collaborative computer-aided design software, Multi-user CAD (MUCAD) which allows synchronous design. This enabled a comparison of the output of four-person teams using MUCAD and traditional CAD (sharing models through email).…”
