A Comparative Analysis of Aquatic and Polyethylene-Associated Antibiotic-Resistant Microbiota in the Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: In this study, we evaluated the microbiome and the resistome profile of water and fragments of polyethylene (PE) waste collected at the same time from a stream and the seawater in a coastal area of Northwestern Sicily. Although a core microbiome was determined by sequencing of the V3–V4 region of the bacterial 16S rDNA gene, quantitative differences were found among the microbial communities on PE waste and the corresponding water samples. Our findings indicated that PE waste contains a more abundant and incre… Show more

“…All tet genes detected in this study (tet (A), tet (B), tet (C), tet (D), tet (E), tet (G)) are implicated in the mechanism of tetracycline extrusion from the bacterial cell, that represents a common strategy of tetracycline resistance. We did not detect tet (O) and tet (W), that were recently found to be diffused in Gram-negative bacteria isolated from water samples of various origin [34]. The most frequently detected gene was tet (A), harbored by 14/25 (56%) strains; this gene encodes a subunit of the tetracycline efflux pump found in many species of Gram-negative bacteria [35].…”

“…We could surmise that the high abundance of Proteobacteria in the ES could depend on maternal influence and environmental components (such as the mineralogical substrate of the beach, seawater, and exogenous bacterial source). Conversely, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes are less abundant in the sand and seawater [ 64 ], thus suggesting an influence of the mother in providing eggs with these bacteria during the passage through the oviduct or cloaca.…”

“…In the last ten years, the worldwide production of plastic and plastic-based materials increased up to 20-fold, generating large amounts of waste that excessively accumulate in the environment (Gouveia, Biernacki, Castro, Goncalves, & Souza, 2019;Shivangi, Dorairaj, Negi, Shetty, & 2021). This event poses crucial ecological and toxicological problems, as several synthetic polymers used for producing plastic-based materials can cause severe health issues and can be carrier of microorganisms (Shivangi et al, 2021;Gao, He, Sun, He, & Zeng 2019;Sucato et al, 2021). Thus, we are witnessing an increased demand for safer alternatives that can replace non-biodegradable plastic-based materials.…”
