Abstract: A compact quasi‐yagi antenna for multifunction radar applications is proposed, consisting of a dual dipole‐driven element, a half bow‐tie reflector and a bow‐tie director. Size reduction is achieved by adding the half bow‐tie reflector structure. Addition of the half bow‐tie reflector and bow‐tie director improves the gain and front‐to‐back ratio in the Very high frequency (VHF)/Ultra high frequency (UHF) band. A dual-band quasi-Yagi antenna with diverse radiation patterns at different frequency bands is presented for the Wi-Fi 6E applications. It has multiple working bands that cover the two existing bands of traditional Wi-Fi 6, that is, from 2.4-2.4835 to 5.17−5.835 GHz, as well as the upcoming extended Wi-Fi 6E band that covers the 5.925−7.125 GHz band. The proposed antenna consists of a microstrip (MS) line, a coplanar strip-line (CPS), a bow-tie driven dipole element, a slotted ground plane and a parasitic director element. By jointly employing these structures, multiple resonances can be generated, where the resonance with largest current path results in low-frequency working band, while the others are merged to form a relatively wide high-frequency band. In the low-frequency band, the antenna has an omnidirectional radiation pattern with wide beam-coverage, while in the high-frequency band, the antenna can achieve directional radiation pattern with high gain value. An antenna prototype is then fabricated and measured for validation. Good agreement between the simulated and measured results is observed. The measured −10 dB impedance fractional bandwidth are 4.3% (2.38−2.484 GHz) and 60.6% (4.47−8.36 GHz) in the low-and high-frequency bands, respectively, associated with peak gain values 0.64 and 6.22 dBi. The antenna's overall size is 0.22 λ L × 0.20 λ L × 0.006 λ L . The proposed antenna is a good candidate for multiple kinds of Wi-Fi applications.

A 28 GHz 5G Phased Array Antenna with Air-Hole Slots for Beam Width Enhancement

In this paper, a 28 GHz fifth-generation (5G) phased array antenna with air-hole slots for beam width enhancement is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of eight dipole radiators on a mobile handset-sized ground with air-hole slots between the two adjacent elements for enhancing the half power beam width (HPBW) in the elevation plane. The dimensions of the proposed antenna are 130 mm × 42 mm × 0.127 mm. The proposed array antenna satisfies a −10 dB reflection coefficient in the frequency range from 27.2 to 29.2 GHz with a peak gain of 10.33 dBi and a side lobe level (SLL) of 13 dB. In addition to its good performance, the proposed antenna has a very wide HPBW (measured) in the elevation plane, up to 219 degree with a scan coverage of ±45 degree in the azimuth plane. The proposed antenna demonstrates excellent hemispheric beam coverage for 5G mobile handset devices and can enable cost-effective mass production.

In this paper, a bow-tie quasi-Yagi antenna with a modified ground plane structure is proposed for wideband characteristics. The ground plane structure of the proposed antenna improved the impedance-matching characteristics by inserting a parallel plate ground with a width equal to the parallel-coupled feed line width. This simply modified ground plane structure can lead to an improvement in impedance matching by additional inductance, capacitance, mutual inductance, and mutual capacitance components. The proposed antenna has a −10-dB reflection coefficient fractional bandwidth of 30 % and a realized gain of 7.7 dBi at the center frequency.
