A Compact Treatment of Singular Impurities Using the Artificial Friedel Resonance (FAIR) Technique

Abstract: Building on the tools that Friedel introduced in the 1950s, an off-spring of the Friedel resonance is developed, which is called the FAIR approach for "Friedel Artificially Inserted Resonance". In the FAIR approach, an arbitrary s-electron state a † 0 is cut out of the conduction band, and the remaining free electron Hamiltonian is orthogonalized, yielding an artificial Friedel resonance. In the presence of a real Friedel d-resonance state d † , one can find an optimal fair state a † 0 so that the exact n-elec… Show more

“…It is known as the FAIR solution of the Kondo ground-state. A short review is given in the festschrift to Jaques Friedel's 90's birthday [17] with extended references therein. Although it is not an exact solution as the Bethe-ansatz, it describes the physics of the Kondo ground-state very well, and it is well equipped to answer Wilson's implicit questions behind the physics of the NRG cross-over.…”

“…He observed a crossover from weak to strong coupling with increasing n (number of renormalization steps). In this article the FAIR solution of the Kondo ground-state [17] is applied to reproduce and interpret Wilson's results (FAIR=Friedel artificially inserted resonance).…”

“…It has reproduced a number of numerical results with good accuracy and produced a number of new results, such as the polarization of the Kondo cloud [20], oscillations in the Kondo cloud [21], Friedel oscillations of the FA impurity [22], and, in the magnetic pseudo-ground state, the magnetic moment [23], which roughly corresponds to the mean field result with half the Coulomb energy U because of the reduced density of states in the d-resonances [9]. A review of the FAIR theory is given in [24].…”

“…The properties of magnetic impurities in a metallic host have fascinated physicists for a long time, particularly after the publication of Kondo's paper [1] 50 years ago. In the meantime the field of the "Kondo effect" has matured (see for example [2], [3], [4], [5]). One of the open questions is the so-called Kondo cloud.…”
