A compact ridge filter for spread out Bragg peak production in pulsed proton clinical beams

Abstract: A number of designs have been proposed for ridge filters and range modulators used in proton therapy to modify the beam in order to spread out the Bragg peak. Despite the variety of solutions, no simple design capable of providing large fields and easy variation of the spread out Bragg peak (SOBP) length in a pulsed beam has been developed. We propose a compact ridge filter that can be used in a proton beam of any time structure. It allows the production of depth dose distributions that meet the requirements o… Show more

“…In other words, the SOBP is the response to energy modulation of a mono-energetic beam. There are two main ways of modulating beam energy and superimposing Bragg peaks: one uses a ridge filter device (Larsson, 1961;Kostjuchenko et al, 2001), and the other uses a rotating range modulator (Koehler et al, 1975). The ridge filter device is composed of many uniform barridges, manufactured with highly precise processing technology, that are set parallel to each other on one plane as shown in Fig.…”

“…The range straggling can be increased by increasing the initial beam range (energy) and adding a pre-absorber to degrade the range by an equal amount. Other methods to increase the delivery efficiency were reported, such as the use of ridge filters (Akagi et al 2003, Kostjuchenko et al 2001) and other filters (Li et al 2007), and downstream absorbers were used successfully to minimize the penumbral width in passively scattered proton beams for radiosurgery (Newhauser et al 2002). However, we were unable to find any report on the application of downstream pre-absorbers to substantially improve the lateral properties of scanned proton treatment beams.…”

“…Several range modulation techniques are applied in proton therapy. The detailed description of these tech-200 niques can be found elsewhere [40,41]. A method of particular interest is utilizing absorbers with different thick- nesses in the beam path to adjust the initial beam energy.…”
