A Compact Planar Printed MIMO Antenna Design

Abstract: In this paper we describe the design of a novel planar MIMO antenna. The basic idea of the design is the development of a canonical 2-port antenna that can be replicated and concatenated together to form MIMO antennas with arbitrary even numbers of ports. The design of the canonical element uses compact folded slots for the radiating elements but includes the use of field cancellation to enhance isolation by incorporating a coupling parasitic element. In addition by properly designing the coupling parasitic an… Show more

“…With the ever increasing demand for more capacity, it is anticipated that massive MIMO will be central to 5G systems; and it will be facilitated by compact dense arrays. However, strong inter-element coupling occurs when the element spacing is small; it dramatically increases the spatial correlations and seriously deteriorates the signal-to-interference-plus-noise -ratio (SINR) [3]. Consequently, mutual coupling effects between array elements have attracted intense attention.…”

“…It can be seen that, most of the multi-element MIMO systems focus on having pattern-diversity using directional antenna beams. Also generally when antenna density is much less (< 0.1 per λ 2 ), the isolation is poor [9], [10], [20]. Although good isolation is achieved for the design in [11], it does not have diverse polarization features.…”

“…38 A parasitic element was used for decreasing the value of mutual coupling and to cancel the adverse effects. The gain of 1.2 dBi and isolation of >10 dB were obtained with this approach …”
