The physical mechanism of the radiation generation of all possible output modes of the relativistic magnetron (RM) with all cavity-magnetron axial extraction technique is theoretically analysed, and the necessary conditions for generating these modes are obtained respectively. Assuming that n 0 is the number of the electron spokes, N ≥ 4 as the total number of the cavities is an even number, and k is a nonnegative integer, some conclusions can be drawn as follows. If n 0 = kN is true, no mode can be excited in the coaxial waveguide; if n 0 = (2k + 1)N/4 is true, the linearly polarized modes can be excited in the coaxial waveguide; if n 0 = (4k + 2)N/4 is true, the TEM mode and the linearly polarized modes can be excited in the coaxial waveguide; if n 0 takes other value, the left and right circularly polarized modes can be excited in the coaxial waveguide and the directions of rotation of the circularly polarized modes can be reversed with the reversion of the direction of rotation of the electron spokes; in addition, some other regular characteristics of the corresponding mode excitation are presented in detail in this paper. Such unique attractive properties that have been verified by the cold and hot simulations in this paper make it possible for this type of RM to meet application requirements of various high power microwave (HPM) modes.

In this article, we present a compact efficient and frequency tunable relativistic magnetron (RM) with what we have named a reducing coaxial section (RCS) and with tilted tuners. The RCS is a conical-shaped part inserted in front of the output window. The design is adapted to the compact Marx generator of the Concept Léger Aéroporté d'Illuminateur RadioElectrique (CEA)-Gramat demonstrator-Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives (CLAIRE)-and meets technical requirements such as input impedance (specifically during frequency shifting), mechanical dimensions, power handling capacity, and electromagnetic (EM) mode. Special care has been taken to lower the EM mode competition, which occurs with specific geometry, extraction waveguide with high dimensions, and/or frequency shifting. To mitigate this effect, the output waveguide diameter was decreased by means of the RCS design. Another challenge was to operate frequency shifting by adding tuners while maintaining high power handling. The premise is that cathode endcap spheres and tilted tuners theoretically reduce the electric field strength from 600 to 280 kV/cm. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation exhibits an output power (averaged over the pulse duration) that reaches 680 MW at 1.85 GHz. The corresponding maximum power efficiency is about 50% when the applied voltage is 380 kV, and the current intensity is about 3.8 kA. The frequency operating range is above 19% from 1.85 to 2.25 GHz.

A “crab-like” A6 relativistic magnetron with diffraction output driven by a transparent cathode

We present the design of an A6 relativistic magnetron with diffraction output (MDO) which looks like a crab and we named it the “crab-like” A6 MDO. This article shows that the crab-like A6 MDO driven by a transparent cathode can radiate the TE11 mode with an output power of about 1 GW when an optimized applied voltage of U=440 kV and magnetic field of B=0.43 T are used. Its electronic efficiency, as obtained using UNIPIC particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, can be as high as 44% in S-band. The UNIPIC PIC code used in simulations also demonstrates that the crab-like A6 MDO can radiate both two electron spokes in the TE21 mode with an operating frequency of 2.1 GHz and four electron spokes in the TE21 mode with an operating frequency of 2.5 GHz when different magnetic field amplitudes are used for an applied voltage of U=400 kV. This result suggests that this configuration is favorable for mode switching. This work seeks to design a compact high power microwave source for a narrowband directed microwave wave beam that is suitable for mode switching investigations.
