Flexible smart sensing skin is a key enabling technology for the future "Fly-by-Feel" control of morphing aircraft. It represents the next-generation skin of aircraft that can exhibit a more powerful sensing function than a conventional one and could be mounted on arbitrary curvilinear surfaces, especially for advanced autonomic, morphing aircraft. Recent significant technical advances in flexible electronics have overcome many historic drawbacks of conventional smart skin, e.g., only a limited number of discrete block sensors can be integrated due to the inevitable structural damage and heavy guidelines. Herein, we review the key developments in flexible sensors technology and highlight both the state-of-the-art devices and the potential applications for the measurement of aircraft. We begin with the importance of flexible smart skin for morphing aircraft and then expand to the latest progress in various types of flexible sensors. Then we highlight flexible sensors as smart skin to measure aerodynamic parameters and monitor the structural health, and further to achieve the Fly-by-Feel control. Finally, the challenges and opportunities on flexible smart sensing skin are discussed, from the functional design to practical applications.

An intelligent assembly method was designed to realize the intelligent assembly of the profiled thermal battery pack and improve its assembly accuracy. Firstly, as the number and size of different monomer batteries vary, this paper takes the monomer thermal battery assembly as the object, with a common shape circle assembly screw arrangement and an established process model. Then, the assembly also has an improved differential evolution algorithm for assembly arrangement and process on the number, location, tightening of the screw assembly, torque, and the order of solutions. According to this scheme, the assembly and the flatness test were carried out. The results showed that the bottom plate of the assembly frame was “concave in the middle and warped around”, and the flatness error was large. The scheme was optimized by numerical simulation analysis. After optimization, the average offset of the floor plane was 0.04 mm, and the offset accounted for 0.028% of the overall height; the maximum offset was 0.094 mm and the offset was reduced by 0.312%.

End-fire array antenna is a kind of special radar antenna with beam pointing perpendicular to the normal direction of the array. Because of its low profile and directional radiation characteristics, it is especially suitable for blind zone compensation of airborne radar. However, there are few publicly available pieces of literature on clutter suppression for end-fire array radar. In this paper, we firstly simulate and analyze the clutter spectrum characteristics for end-fire array airborne radar (EAAR), and then propose a clutter suppression method for EAAR based on adaptive segmentation. In the proposed method, the concept of Riemann mean distance of temporal covariance matrix is introduced to quantify the clutter nonstationarity, and in this way we realize adaptive segmentation of the clutter range-Doppler spectrum. Then the different clutter suppression methods including pulse Doppler (PD) processing, two-dimensional space-time adaptive processing (2D STAP), and three-dimensional STAP (3D STAP) are used to suppress clutter in different regions. The theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that compared with 3D STAP, the proposed method not only guarantees clutter suppression performance, but also reduces the computational complexity to an extent.
