A compact low-trigger-threshold multigap gas switch

Abstract: Herein, we present the details of the design and performance of a compact low-trigger-threshold multigap gas switch used for linear transformer drivers. By integrating a resistor-capacitor network in parallel with switch gaps, the trigger threshold voltage of the switch is reduced; meanwhile, the switch has a compact structure of 117 mm in diameter and 156 mm in height. The self-breakdown and triggering characteristics of the switch are theoretically and experimentally investigated. The experimental results sh… Show more

“…This is due to the fact that the self-breakdown voltage characteristics of the multi gap switch in which the voltage graded by the corona current is highly dependent on the corona current characteristics [3]. It is known that a multi gap switch using corona discharge has a somewhat lower self-break voltage characteristic than the multi gap switch where a solid resistance grades voltage to the gaps [9,10]. This is because the actual resistance value (2) U b = 242.2pd + 19.9 √ pd, formed in the electrode gap by the corona current is a variable that has a unique transient characteristic and changes non-linearly as the charging voltage increases, so that the voltage could not be uniformly distributed to the electrode gaps.…”

“…This switch design has a lifetime of more than 10,000 cycles and low operating pressure and low jitter at low trigger voltage by grading the charge voltage to the gaps by corona discharge and forming multi-channels in gaps, [3,4]. This has been applied to switches of many LTD systems in the development stages [7,8], and several research results have been reported improved performance of the switch by adding design changes and circuit elements for performance optimization [9,10]. However, relatively large physical size and the resulting high inductance remain a factor to be improved.…”
