A compact instrument for gamma-ray burst detection on a CubeSat platform I

Abstract: The Educational Irish Research Satellite 1 (EIRSAT-1) is a 2U CubeSat being developed under ESA’s Fly Your Satellite! programme. The project has many aspects, which are primarily educational, but also include space qualification of new detector technologies for gamma-ray astronomy and the detection of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The Gamma-ray Module (GMOD), the main mission payload, is a small gamma-ray spectrometer comprising a 25 mm × 25 mm × 40 mm cerium bromide scintillator coupled to an array of 16 silicon p… Show more

“…A companion paper [ 56 ] presents the simulation study for GMOD, including predicted effective area as a function of energy and off-axis angle, and estimated GRB detection rates. The environmental qualification campaign is described in [ 57 ].…”

“…Its three novel payloads (including GMOD) incorporate technologies whose use in low-earth orbit will be demonstrated for the first time. In addition, GMOD is predicted to detect ∼ 18 GRBs/year in the 50 keV to 300 keV energy range [56]. There is an ongoing global effort to rapidly communicate the detection of gamma-ray transients (e.g.…”

“…Further detailed characterisation of the GMOD instrument, including determination of the off-axis response of the detector within the stack, will be performed on the EQM and used to verify the simulated performance estimates [56]. The flight models of both GMOD and the EIRSAT-1 spacecraft will then be assembled and qualified to acceptance levels before delivery to ESA for subsequent launch.…”

“…programme [26] of the European Space Agency's (ESA's) Education Office [27,28]. The mission incorporates three payloads developed at UCD; a gamma-ray detector, the Gamma-ray Module (GMOD) [29,30]; a thermal coating management experiment, the Enbio Module (EMOD); and an attitude control algorithm, Wave-Based Control (WBC) [31]. In addition to the payloads, a custom antenna deployment module (ADM) is being developed for the mission at UCD [32].…”
