A Compact Dual-Band Power Amplifier Driver for 2.4GHz and 5.2GHz WLAN Transmitters

Abstract: This paper presents a dual-band power amplifier (PA) driver with matched output operating in the 2.4 GHz and 5.2 GHz ISM bands. The use of tunable differential inductors both in the RF choke and the matching circuit saves significant die-area compared to traditional configurations of integrated PA drivers. The fabricated circuit size is as small as 0.48 mm 2 for the used 0.18 μm CMOS process, saving about 0.5 mm 2 silicon area. Measurement results show that the circuit achieves 10.4 dB gain and a maximum outpu… Show more

“…For linearity measurement, a two-tone test was performed The sizes of the references above are much smaller (Ref. [10] excludes pads) than in this work as they all exclude the balun. So the specifications of the references may degrade a little if applied with balun, especially with an on-chip balun.…”

“…Unfortunately, only with the tunable capacitor, the tunable frequency range is not sufficient and the dual-band optimization is difficult to be achieved simultaneously. To overcome these problems, a switched dual mode inductor can be introduced [4,5]. In this work, a new switched inductor is designed in the single ended fashion and the occupied area is reduced nearly within one inductor size by overlapping the two separate spirals.…”

“…Many studies have been conducted on microstrip circular ring, square loop, circular disk, and square patch. For example, miniature meander loop resonators for dual-mode filter design were reported in [4,5].…”
