A communication tool for cancer patients with pain: The art therapy technique of the Body Outline

Abstract: The results suggest that because of its abstract symbolic feature, the Body Outline is a very flexible therapeutic intervention. It must be offered within the relationship with the art therapist, and it may fulfill quite a variety of expressive needs, from the description of physical pain to the elaboration of spiritual longings.

“…Art therapy is regarded as a complementary medicine that can be used as a model for processing the emotional trauma and stress (Suzuki, 2004). For many years, art therapy has been used for this purpose in rehabilitation settings (Pratt & Wood, 1998;Hiltebrandt, 1999;Malchiodi, 1999;Minar, 1999;Borgmann, 2002;Heywood, 2003;Luzzatto et al, 2003). Up until now, art therapy research is scant; however Gabriel et al (2001) reported that art therapy was beneficial for adult bone marrow transplant inpatients, and Rusted et al (2002) found that patients with dementia had better emotional adjustment skills after therapy.…”

“…Art therapy can be compatible with brief approaches such as solution-focused therapy~Mal-chiodi, 1999!. Today, many art therapists working within cancer care and rehabilitation, providing imaginative interventions through individual sessions and open0closed groups, have documented their methods and individual art therapy processes Ziesler, 1993;Pratt & Wood, 1998;Malchiodi, 1999;Luzzatto & Gabriel, 2000;Gabriel et al, 2001;Borgmann, 2002;Luzzatto et al, 2003!. Many illuminating case studies, but no randomized controlled studies, have been found describing art therapy and coping among adults in a cancer care setting. The aim of the present study was to describe the effects of a clinically applicable art therapy intervention program on coping resources in women undergoing radiotherapy for breast cancer.…”
