A common language: Using B.F. Skinner's verbal behavior for assessment and treatment of communication disabilities in SLP-ABA.

Abstract: Professionals in the field of speech-language pathology (SLP) and applied behavior analysis (ABA) share a common goal in the treatment of communication disorders. The two fields, however, do not share a common language. Skinner's definition of verbal behavior and his classification of verbal operants provide interventionists with a valuable tool for classifying verbal behavior based on controlling variables. An understanding of the primary verbal operants and operants under multiple control are essential for p… Show more

“…The contributions of behavior analysts to improve the lives of persons with and without disabilities are prevalent throughout many disciplines, including, but not limited to, psychology (Critchfield, 2011), speech-language pathology (Frost & Bondy, 2006), occupational therapy (Barton, Reichow, Schnitz, Smith, & Sherlock, 2015), kinesiology (Yanardağ et al, 2011), and substance abuse (Silverman, 2004). Within the field of education, there is arguably the greatest evidence of behavior analytic impact extending across decades (Alberto & Troutman, 2012; Cooper, 1982; Wolery, Bailey, & Sugai, 1988) and influencing education policy.…”

“…There are now more than 60 studies showing the efficacy of PECS in increasing Help Across the Spectrum 21 functional communication in a number of different populations (A. Bondy, personal communication, December 2009;Rehfeldt & Root, 2005), but especially in young children with ASD (Bondy, 2001;Charlop-Christy et al, 2002;Frost & Bondy, 2006;Yokoyama, Naoi, & Yamamoto, 2006). Obviously, if a child quickly learns to vocally imitate and acquire functional spoken words in an early intervention program, then a picture exchange system like PECS would not be necessary.…”
