A combined high-pressure experimental and theoretical study of the electronic band-structure of scheelite-type AWO4 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb) compounds

Abstract: The optical-absorption edge of single crystals of CaWO 4 , SrWO 4 , BaWO 4 , and PbWO 4 has been measured under high pressure up to ~20 GPa at room temperature. From the measurements we have obtained the evolution of the band-gap energy with pressure. We found a low-pressure range (up to 7-10 GPa) where alkaline-earth tungstates present a very small E g pressure dependence (-2.1 < dE g /dP < 8.9 meV/GPa).In contrast, in the same pressure range, PbWO 4 has a pressure coefficient of -62 meV/GPa. The high-pressure… Show more

“…The conclusions drawn from DFT calculation were very in accord with the experimental results that cyclohexyl hydroxamic acid exhibited better collecting ability than BHA to scheelite [11]. Density functional theory has also been proved to be an accurate tool to explore the physical and chemical properties of scheelite-type and wolframite-type oxides [12,13].…”

“…The obtained values for the band-gap energy (E g ) should be considered as a lower boundary for it due to the well-known tendency of GGA to slightly underestimate E g . [28][29][30] 3 Results and discussion…”

“…Measurements in the visible-near-IR range were made with an optical setup that consisted of a tungsten lamp, fused silica lenses, reflecting optics objectives, and a visible-near-IR spectrometer [35]. The optical-absorption spectra were obtained from the transmittance spectra of the sample, which were recorded using the sample-in, sample-out method [36,37].…”
