A Combined Approach of Using an SDBR and a STATCOM to Enhance the Stability of a Wind Farm

Abstract: This paper presents a method to enhance the stability of grid connected wind farm composed of fixed speed wind turbine generator system (WTGS) using a combination of small size series dynamic breaking resistor (SDBR) and static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). SDBR and STATCOM have the active and reactive power control abilities, respectively, and a combination of these units pave the way to stabilize well the fixed speed wind farm. In this study, centralized control scheme of using SDBR and STATCOM in toget… Show more

“…The two foremost types of LVRT capability enhancement methods are external devices based methods and modified controller based methods. Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) , Braking Chopper (BC) or active crowbar system [66][67][68][69][70], FACTS devices [71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90] and some other methods such as Series Dynamic Breaking Resistor (SDBR), electronic on Load Tap Changer (OLTC) [91][92][93][94][95] are popular methods for LVRT capability enhancement using external devices. Pitch Angle Control (PAC) [96][97][98][99] and modified back-to-back converter controllers [100][101][102][103][104][105][106][107][108] are modified controller based methods.…”

“…A DFIG with a crowbar circuit is a very common solution for LVRT [14,15], but this solution is confined to the rotor side, such as limiting DC capacitor voltage and rotor current. A STATCOM can improve the LVRT performance of a wind farm [16], and it is often used in collaboration with crowbar circuits. The SDBR in [17] could improve the LVRT capacity of a DFIG, and the bypass switching control mode uses the method introduced in [18].…”

“…Series-braking resistors are very useful for stability enhancement, and unlike parallel-braking resistors, they can be used to act during fault to provide energy balance and enhance the machine's critical clearing time [16]- [18]. In this type, a resistor is put in parallel with a conventional mechanical switch that can be controlled by a fault-triggering scheme, but it has very slow response time.…”

“…In this type, a resistor is put in parallel with a conventional mechanical switch that can be controlled by a fault-triggering scheme, but it has very slow response time. Further research shows that the seriesbraking resistor's performance can be significantly enhanced by the use of solid-state switches such as insulated-gate bipolar transistors [18].…”
