A combined approach for a modern hydrogeological mapping: the case study of Tennacola stream catchment (central Apennine, Italy)

Abstract: The current European water legislation, specifically the one addressed to groundwater for human consumption (EU Water Framework Directive, WFD-2000/60/EC), provides clear indications on the objectives and actions to be taken for the proper management and protection of water resources. In Italy, as well as in other countries of the EU, the implementation of this Directive, in the face of an adjustment of the legislation at national level, is still far behind, as regards the obligations on the part of local admi… Show more

“…There, the protection of groundwater resources demonstrates the importance of the implementation of regulatory directives for water supply protection [237]. The current European water legislation, in particular that addressed groundwater protection for human consumption (EU Water Framework Directive, WFD-2000/60/EC), provides objectives and directs actions to properly protect and manage water resources [238]. The implementation of this directive in southern Italy, with its Mediterranean climate and hydrology, is still far behind schedule [239], but in Central Italy the Rieti Land Reclamation Authority directs the management of surface waters for irrigation, as well as for environmental and hydrogeological protection [240].…”

“…Maps are some of the main products of the hydrogeology studies supporting reliable hydrogeological conceptualizations both in professional practices (groundwater planning and management) and in scientific research (Teixeira et al, 2013;Chaminé et al, 2015). Hydrogeological maps are essential tools for groundwater resources evaluation, identification of the aquifers recharge areas, definition of the springs location and main groundwater discharge directions determination (Zaltsberg, 1986;Schürch et al, 2007;McDonald et al 2012 ;Al-Jiburi & Al-Basrawi, 2015;La Vigna et al, 2016;Manca et al, 2017;Brkić & Briški, 2018;Giacopetti et al, 2019a;Lucianetti et al, 2019;Lancia et al, 2020).…”

“…In very recent times interesting research on hydrogeological mapping has been developed in different Mediterranean geological and geomorphological contexts, e.g. : an original hydrogeological map of Etna volcanic massif as useful tool for groundwater resources management (Ferrara & Pappalardo, 2008); the hydrogeology layout of the Sabatini volcanic district in Central Italy (Manca et al, 2017); a hydrogeological mapping case-study of a heterogeneous and multi-layered ophiolitic aquifers in the Northern Apennines (Segadelli et al, 2017); a groundwater analysis of a sedimentary sequence consisting of limestones, marly limestones and marls in the Sibillini Mountains National Park, in Central Apennines (Boni et al, 2009;Giacopetti et al, 2019).…”
