A combination of resveratrol and quercetin induces browning in white adipose tissue of rats fed an obesogenic diet

Abstract: Objective: To analyze whether a combination of quercetin (Q) and resveratrol (RSV) would induce a white adipose tissue (WAT) browning effect. Methods: Thirty-six rats were fed an obesogenic diet and divided into four groups: control, treated with RSV (15 mg/kg body weight/day; RSV group), treated with Q (30 mg/kg body weight/day; Q group), or treated with both polyphenols (RSV 1 Q group). Results: After 6 weeks, body and WAT weights were significantly reduced in the RSV 1 Q group. In perirenal WAT of the contr… Show more

“…15,16 Finally, several reports reveal that Res is able to induce beiging in WATs. [17][18][19] However, how Res regulates the metabolism of adipose tissue and WAT browning remains mostly elusive, and whether its metabolites are involved in this process is poorly understood. The current study first illustrated that Res reduced fat accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes with insulin resistance via Sirt1 pathway.…”

“…Zhao et al used HFD-induced rats to show synergism between quercetin and resveratrol [38]. Another group has also reported the synergistic effect of this pair “browning” of white adipose tissue [39]. In this study, we first analyzed the possible synergy of BR-SR pair by a network pharmacological approach.…”

“…These results were accompanied by increased protein expression of PRDM16 and cytochrome c, two markers of brown adipogenesis . By contrast, in a study carried out in our laboratory, resveratrol was not able to induce browning in inguinal or perirenal white adipose depots from rats fed a high‐fat diet and treated with resveratrol at a dose of 15 mg/kg/day . An important factor that can explain, at least in part, the discrepancy between these two studies is that the mouse may be a more sensitive responder than the rat.…”

“…An important factor that can explain, at least in part, the discrepancy between these two studies is that the mouse may be a more sensitive responder than the rat. Recently, several cases of white adipose tissue browning induced by resveratrol derivatives, such as BTM‐0512, or resveratrol combinations, such as resveratrol and quercetin, have been reported. Nevertheless, this review focuses only on resveratrol.…”
