A Collaborative Enterprise for Multi-Stakeholder Participation in the Advancement of Quantitative Imaging

Abstract: Medical imaging has seen substantial and rapid technical advances during the past decade, including advances in image acquisition devices, processing and analysis software, and agents to enhance specificity. Traditionally, medical imaging has defined anatomy, but increasingly newer, more advanced, imaging technologies provide biochemical and physiologic information based on both static and dynamic modalities. These advanced technologies are important not only for detecting disease but for characterizing and as… Show more

“…The Radiological Society of North America has formed the Quantitative Imaging Biomarker Alliance (QIBA) to advance quantitative imaging in clinical care and facilitating imaging as a biomarker in clinical trials [24,25]. While engaging many stakeholders across academia, government, and industry, the effort is limited to the most mature biomarkers.…”

“…Other QIBs include coronary artery calcium scores from CT for atherosclerosis screening, Standardized Uptake Values (SUV) in PET imaging to measure cancer cell activity, and Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced MRI for measuring microvascularity of tumors. The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) created the Quantitative Imaging Biomarker Alliance (QIBA) to investigate the role of quantitative imaging methods, including CT volumetry, in evaluating disease and responses to treatment [1-3]. …”

“…This paper is motivated by the activities of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Quantitative Imaging Biomarkers Alliance (QIBA) [9]. The mission of QIBA is to improve the value and practicality of quantitative imaging biomarkers by reducing variability across devices, patients, and time.…”
