A cold‐induced thioredoxin h of rice, OsTrx23, negatively regulates kinase activities of OsMPK3 and OsMPK6 in vitro

Abstract: a b s t r a c tCytosolic thioredoxins are small conserved proteins that are involved in cellular redox regulation. Here, we report that a major and cold-induced thioredoxin h of rice, OsTrx23, has an inhibitory activity on stress-activated mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), OsMPK3 and OsMPK6 in vitro. This inhibition effects were redox-dependent and did not involve stable physical interaction. The data suggested a novel mechanism for redox regulation of MAPKs in plants.

“…It has been demonstrated that ferritin could reduce accumulation of ROS in response to oxidant challenge (Orino et al 2001). OsTrx23, one of the cold-induced Trx h proteins, plays important roles in response to oxidative stress imposed by cold (Nuruzzaman et al 2008;Xie et al 2009). OsLti6, a hydrophobic transmembrane protein with low molecular weight, is involved in preserving plasma membrane integrity during cold stress in rice (Kim et al 2007;Morsy et al 2005).…”

“…The effects of low temperatures on metabolism, physiology and gene expression of rice cultivars from the japonica subspecies have been shown (Xie et al 2009;Saad et al 2012). Although cold stress has an important impact on indica rice production in sub-tropical areas, reports about cold responses in different indica genotypes are rare (Zhang et al 2012a).…”

“…OsTRXh1 is reportedly expressed in companion cells within the mature phloem (Ishiwatari et al, 1995(Ishiwatari et al, , 1998. Recently, another report showed that OsTRXh1 was induced by cold stress and negatively regulated the kinase activities of Oryza sativa Mitogen-activated Protein Kinase3 (OsMPK3) and OsMPK6 in vitro through a redox-dependent mechanism (Xie et al, 2009).…”
