A CMOS Envelope Tracking Power Amplifier for LTE Mobile Applications

Abstract: Abstract-This paper presents an envelope tracking power amplifier using a standard CMOS process for the 3GPP long-term evolution transmitters. An efficiency of the CMOS power amplifier for the modulated signals can be improved using a highly efficient and wideband CMOS bias modulator. The CMOS PA is based on a two-stage differential common-source structure for high gain and large voltage swing. The bias modulator is based on a hybrid buck converter which consists of a linear stage and a switching stage. The dy… Show more

“…The major function in the converters is played by the switches [4]. On the other hand, they are one of the most energy consuming components in the switching-mode converters [5]. The output power transistors have the big impact over the efficiency of the whole converter's system.…”

“…However, the back‐off operation in power significantly decreases the efficiency of the PAs. For efficiency enhancement, several techniques have been researched, such as Doherty, envelope elimination and restoration, and envelope tracking (ET) . Among these techniques, ET shows a considerable efficiency improvement without significantly deteriorating linearity performance.…”

“…The ET PA consists of a supply modulator and a PA. Generally, the supply modulator is based on a hybrid buck converter which has a linear amplifier for wide bandwidth and a switching amplifier for high efficiency . The hybrid buck converter has a significant degradation of efficiency for low output power due to the power consumption of the linear amplifier.…”

“…To generate the dynamically varying bias voltage for PAs, the ET technique requires a BM that has high speed and high current supplying capability. A hybrid buck converter which consists of a linear stage and a switching stage has been generally used [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9].…”
