A Clustering-Based Approach for Improving the Accuracy of UWB Sensor-Based Indoor Positioning System

Abstract: There are several methods which can be used to locate an object or people in an indoor location. Ultra-wideband (UWB) is a specifically promising indoor positioning technology because of its high accuracy, resistance to interference, and better penetration. This study aims to improve the accuracy of the UWB sensor-based indoor positioning system. To achieve that, the proposed system is trained by using the K-means algorithm with an additional average silhouette method. This helps us to define the optimal numbe… Show more

“…As a result, the real‐time locating system (RTLS) based on ultra‐wideband (UWB) was the most adequate technology for the purpose of this research 49,51‐55 . Based on both the comparisons conducted by other authors 56 and our analysis and available resources, a Decawave ® 57 equipment was chosen as there were experimental precedents in several spaces and situations 58‐65 . This equipment is an ultra‐wideband network constituted by fixed nodes (anchors) and moving nodes (tags).…”

[58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65] This equipment is an ultra-wideband network constituted by fixed nodes (anchors) and moving nodes (tags). Regarding the accuracy, although manufacturers' technical requirements indicate ± 10 centimeters and second intervals, other indications were also considered.…”

“…The plot takes the shape of an arm, and the point at which the arm bends is used as the optimal k value. The silhouette coefficient is another method used to analyze the distance between the resulting clusters via visual representation to determine the best k-value, visually [9,10]. This method measures how similar a data point is to its own cluster (cohesion), compared to other clusters (separation).…”

“…(2) K-means clustering: K-means is considered a crucial clustering algorithm [25], which has an iterative process for datasets. In this iterative process, the datasets are divided into "k" predefined nonoverlapping clusters or subgroups.…”
