The article reviews the physics related to kaon and antikaon production in heavy ion reactions at intermediate energies. Chiral dynamics predicts substantial modifications of the kaon properties in a dense nuclear environment. The status of the theoretical predictions as well as experimental evidences for medium effects such as repulsive/attractive mass shifts for K + /K − are reviewed. In the vicinity of the thresholds, and even more pronounced below threshold, the production of strangeness is a highly collective process. Starting from elementary reaction channels the phenomenology of K + and K − production, i.e. freeze-out densities, time scales etc. as derived from experiment and theoretical transport calculations is presented. Below threshold kaon production shows a high sensitivity on the nuclear compression reached in heavy ion reactions. This allows to put constraints on the nuclear equation-of-state which are finally discussed.

We investigate the pp → pK + Λ reaction within an effective Lagrangian model where the contributions to the amplitudes are taken into account within the tree level. The initial interaction between the two nucleons is modeled by the exchange of π, ρ, ω and σ mesons and the ΛK + production proceeds via the excitation of the N * (1650), N * (1710), N * (1720) baryonic resonances. The parameters of the model at the nucleon-nucleon-meson vertices are determined by fitting the elastic nucleon-nucleon scattering with an effective interaction based on the exchange of these four mesons, while those at the resonance vertices are calculated from the known decay widths of the resonances as well as the vector meson dominance model. Available experimental data is described well by this approach. The one-pion-exchange diagram dominates the production process at both higher and lower beam energies. The ρ and ω meson exchanges make negligible contributions. However, the σ-exchange processes contribute substantially to the total cross sections at lower beam energies. The excitation of the N * (1710) and N * (1650) resonances dominate this reaction at beam momenta above and below 3 GeV/c respectively. The interference among the amplitudes of various resonance excitation processes is significant. For beam energies very close to the K + production threshold the hyperon-proton final state interaction effects are quite important. The data is selective about the model used to describe the low energy scattering of the two final state baryons.

Using a relativistic effective Lagrangian at the hadronic level, near-threshold ω and φ meson productions in proton proton (pp) collisions, pp → ppω/φ, are studied within the distorted wave Born approximation. Both initial and final state pp interactions are included. In addition to total cross section data, both ω and φ angular distribution data are used to constrain further the model parameters. For the pp → ppω reaction we consider two different possibilities: with and without the inclusion of nucleon resonances. The nucleon resonances are included in a way to be consistent with the π − p → ωn reaction. It is shown that the inclusion of nucleon resonances can describe the data better overall than without their inclusion. However, the SATURNE data in the range of excess energies Q < 31 MeV are still underestimated by about a factor of two. As for the pp → ppφ reaction it is found that the presently limited available data from DISTO can be reproduced by four sets of values for the vector and tensor φN N coupling constants. Further measurements of the energy dependence of the total cross section near threshold energies should help to constrain better the φN N coupling constant. PACS number(s): 25.40.
