A clue to the mechanism of ΛK+ production in pp-reactions

Abstract: We analyse the pp → pΛK + total cross section data which were recently measured by the COSY-11 collaboration at an energy 2 MeV above the reaction threshold. Our analysis suggests that the measurement of the invariant mass spectrum for the ΛK + at energies around 100 MeV above the threshold can provide a new constraint on the theoretical calculations for this reaction. In particular, the measurement can give a clue as to whether the reaction is dominated by resonance excitation or not. Thus, it should contribu… Show more

“…Since no experimental data exist for cross sections involving nucleon resonances one has here to rely on model calculations. Commonly used parameterizations are based on one-boson-exchange models [97,98] or on more microscopic one-boson-exchange + resonance models [99,100,101,102]. Both models are usually applied at the tree level.…”

“…This result is in sharp contrast to the resonance model calculations of Refs. [21,22,24], where these terms were ignored. It must again be emphasized that we have absolutely no freedom in choosing the relative signs of the interference terms.…”

“…The existing theoretical studies of this reaction are based either on a single boson (π or K meson) exchange mechanism [17][18][19][20] or a resonance model [22][23][24]. In the first method, the K + production is assumed to take place essentially through the exchange of one intermediate pion or K-meson; the excitation of any intermediate nucleon resonance is not considered.…”

“…A measurement of the invariant mass distributions for this reaction, should give significant information as to whether contributions from resonances are appreciable or not. Such theoretical studies have been made for the pp → ppη [60], and pp → pΛK + [66] reactions. Thus, the study of the invariant mass distributions may be an alternative method for studying the possible ω-meson (and φ-meson) resonance couplings both theoretically and experimentally.…”
