Methane (CH 4 ) is an attractive energy source and important greenhouse gas. Therefore, from the economic and environmental point of view, scientists are working hard to activate and convert CH 4 into various products or less harmful gas at low-temperature. Although the inert nature of C-H bonds requires high dissociation energy at high temperatures, the efforts of researchers have demonstrated the feasibility of catalysts to activate CH 4 at low temperatures. In this review, the efficient catalysts designed to reduce the CH 4 oxidation temperature and improve conversion efficiencies are described. First, noble metals and transition metal-based catalysts are summarized for activating CH 4 in temperatures ranging from 50 to 500 °C. After that, the partial oxidation of CH 4 at relatively low temperatures, including thermocatalysis in the liquid phase, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and nonthermal plasma technologies, is briefly discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives are presented to provide a systematic guideline for designing and synthesizing the highly efficient catalysts in the complete/partial oxidation of CH 4 at low temperatures.

The electrospinning of polymer nanofibers has received significant attention owing to their high surface-area-tovolume ratio, high porosity, adjustable pore size and texture, and highly interconnected porous structure. In particular, the electrospinning of biodegradable cellulose acetate (CA) nanofibers has sparked interest in diverse applications, including drug delivery systems, scaffolding for tissue engineering, air filtration, and affinity membrane systems. However, the electrospinning process has been mostly performed using toxic and hazardous solvents and additives. We developed electrospun CA nanofibers using a green solvent system comprising dimethyl carbonate and cyclopentanone. The use of green additives, namely, tetrabutylammonium bromide salts and sophorolipid-based biosurfactants, obtained from honey yeast, substantially improved the spinnability of the CA solution. Moreover, the nanofiber diameter and porous texture were tunable by adjusting the solvent ratio. Pore generation was induced using volatile dimethyl carbonate, which quickly evaporated from the fiber jet. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that the electrospinning process can be divided into three stages. The addition of the biosurfactant facilitated the evaporation process and improved the uniformity of the nanofibers. Furthermore, the nanofibers can be degraded using esterase and cellulase enzymes. To summarize, the electrospinning of ultrafine CA porous nanofibers with tunable morphology was achieved using green solvents and additives.

The recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from acidic wastewater is crucial to sustainable development, industrial processes, and human health. In this research, β‐cyclodextrin‐based nanosponges (β‐CD/PVA‐SA NSs) have been proposed as potential adsorbents for europium (Eu), dysprosium (Dy), and gadolinium (Gd) recovery. The nanosponges are synthesized by cross‐linking β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) functionalized polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA). Experimental results indicate that β‐CD/PVA‐SA NSs exhibit favorable selectivity for Eu, Dy, and Gd, with the maximum adsorption capacity of 222, 217, and 204 mg/g, respectively, in addition to stability and cyclicity. β‐CD/PVA‐SA NSs maintain selective adsorption effects towards RE ions that are present in acidic mine drainage (AMD), thereby highlighting their potential for practical applications. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) simulations have unveiled the fundamental interactions between the functional groups anchored in β‐CD/PVA‐SA NSs and the REEs, providing vital insights into their adsorption mechanism. Hence, the utilization of β‐CD/PVA‐SA NSs has the potential to advance initiatives in remediating acidic water pollution and facilitating the sustainable recycling of RE resources.
