A clonal Plasmodium falciparum population in an isolated outbreak of malaria in the Republic of Cabo Verde

Abstract: We present the first parasitological, molecular and longitudinal analysis of an isolated outbreak of malaria. This outbreak occurred on Santiago Island (Republic of Cabo Verde), a region where malaria is hypoendemic and controlled, and thus the population is considered non-immune. Blood samples were collected from the inhabitants over 1 month and during cross-sectional surveys in the following year. The presence and nature of the parasites was determined by PCR. Plasmodium falciparum was the only specie… Show more

“…T he duration of human malaria infections, including P. falciparum can extend to more than one year, often sub-clinically and despite an effective immune response (Eyles & Young, 1951;Arez et al, 1999). It has also been noted that sensi tive parasites sometimes reappear despite adequate antimalarial treatment (White, 1998).…”

“…In Cabo Verde, we are addressing the three biological entities involved in the complex malaria life-cycle doing both parasitological [6,7] and entomological studies (on-going). The present study addresses some human host genetic polymorphisms in association to malaria.…”

“…In the localized outbreak in St. Catarina district [6], we suggest that the genetically homogeneous circulating parasite population could have been a weakly virulent parasite. However, when different localities were studied [7] and Plasmodium falciparum heterogeneity was observed this hypothesis proved untenable.…”
