A clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study of primary and secondary breast angiosarcoma

Abstract: Background: We aimed to study the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical (IHC) (CD117, c-Myc, and p53) characteristics, and overall survival of primary and secondary breast angiosarcoma (BAS). Methods: This was a retrospective study of BAS cases diagnosed between 1997 and 2020 at our institution. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides were reviewed for tumor morphology, margin status, and lymph node metastasis. CD117, p53, D2-40, CD31, and c-Myc IHC stains were performed on 11 viable tissue blocks. Additional… Show more

“…Breast angiosarcomas are classified as primary breast angiosarcoma (PBA) and secondary breast angiosarcoma (SBA). However, in terms of histology, IHC (CD117, c-Myc, P53) and survival, there is no difference between PBA and SBA ( 1 ). Primary angiosarcomas are rarer, with the breast being the most common site.…”

“…The highly malignant and aggressive form may present a more chaotic architecture organized as multilayered abnormal endothelial cells with poorly defined vascular spaces, atypical nuclei, and papillary-like projections. [7,[30][31][32] The poorly differentiated forms present diagnostic challenges due to heterogeneous cytological features and nonspecific characteristics similar to melanoma or anaplastic carcinoma. Thus, immunohistochemical analysis is necessary in the differential diagnosis of poorly differentiated AS types.…”

“…In cases of progressive tumor dedifferentiation, AS is distinguished from melanoma by negativity for melanocytic markers. [7,31,32] Pathogenic progression of AS remains enigmatic, and the mechanism is poorly understood due to poor prognosis. Earlier animal studies have well-established the tumorigenic potentials of foreign bodies.…”
