Background. Dental plaster, white orthodontic gypsum, and construction gypsum have β-hemihydrate particles. Setting time is an essential property of dental gypsum, which can affect the strength of the material. This research aimed to compare construction gypsum, dental plaster, and white orthodontic gypsum’s initial and final setting times. Methods. Three groups were included in this experimental laboratory study: construction gypsum (A), dental plaster (B), and white orthodontic gypsum (C). Each group consisted of 10 samples. Gypsum manipulation consisted of using 120 gr of powder and 60 mL of water. Gypsum powder and water were mixed using a gypsum mixer at 120 rpm. A homogeneous mixture was poured into a mold, and the setting time was measured using a Gillmore needle, according to ASTM C266-03. The initial setting time test was measured using 113.4 grams and a 2.12-mm needle. The final setting time was measured using 453.6 grams and a 1.06-mm needle. This test was repeated until the needle failed to penetrate the gypsum’s surface. All the data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests using SPSS 23. Results. The average initial setting time for groups A, B, and C were 10.39±1.19, 16.17±1.40, and 24.46±1.51, respectively. The average final setting time for groups A, B, and C were 15.97±0.79, 24.31±0.88) and 33.37±0.66, respectively. One-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests showed significant differences in the initial and final setting times between the three groups (P<0.05). Conclusion. There were differences in setting time between dental plaster, white orthodontic gypsum, and construction gypsum. The construction gypsum’s setting time is suitable as a type II dental gypsum, according to ADA No.25.

Objective: This research aims to explore the potential of brown algae species padina sp. as a dental impression material by examining the physical characteristics of the sodium alginate extraction of brown algae species padina sp. Material and Methods:This research is a quasi-experimental with one-shot case study design. Samples are brown algae species padina sp. from Punaga and Puntondo beach in South Sulawesi. Brown algae species padina sp. is extracted to obtain sodium alginate and further tested for physical characteristics including viscosity test and water content. Results:The extraction of brown algae species padina sp. resulted in 250 grams (25%) of brown powdered sodium alginate that smelled fishy. Physical characteristic tests revealed the water content of sodium alginate species from brown algae padina sp. was 8%. This result is acceptable for sodium alginate water content as set by the Food Chemical Codex that requires less than 15% water content. The measurement of the viscosity obtained is 13.33 cps. Conclusion:These results indicate that the species of brown algae padina sp. has the potential to be one of the basic materials of dental impression material.

History of dental biomaterials: biocompatibility, durability and still open challenges

Objective This review paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the historical evolution of dental biomaterials, as well as to understand the reasons behind their biocompatibility and to identify the key factors that have influenced their development and use over the past 5000 years. Data sources The sources for this review were primarily obtained through Scopus and other online databases, such as Google Scholar, which were searched for relevant publications spanning clinical, archeological, and materials science literature. In cases where no other sources were available, information was gathered through consultation with museums and owners of private collections. Study selection Our search was conducted using specific materials and ages as keywords and, for the last two centuries, retrieving scientific articles written at that time of the first development and commercialization. When possible, secondary sources such as literature reviews were prioritized, while not peer-reviewed documents were utilized only when no other sources were available. References with varying perspective and findings were included, also when presented contradictory or controversial information. Conclusions In this review, clinical, archeological and chemical data could be merged into a comprehensive analysis of the historical evolution of the concept of biocompatibility in dental materials. The results of this review emphasize the significant advances that have been made in the field of dental biomaterials in terms of biocompatibility, from the use of gold and other metals in ancient civilizations to the development of modern materials such as resin composites and ceramics. Clinical significance By analyzing the development and use of dental biomaterials over the centuries from clinical, archeological and chemical perspectives, the review sheds light on the key factors that have shaped our understanding of biocompatibility in dental materials and the importance of this concept in the success of dental restorations.
