A Clinical and Radiological Correlation of the Lesions Produced by Chemopallidectomy and Thalamectomy

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to present the clinical and radiological correlation of 360 intracerebral lesions placed in 300 patients who underwent surgery for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. These cases represent a consecutive series of patients, part of a total of more than 800 basal ganglia operations performed on our service since 1952. Details of the surgical technique employed have already been reported (St. Barnabas Symposium on "Surgical Therapy of Extrapyramidal Disorders", 1956;Cooper, 1956;Coo… Show more

“…They also concluded that lesioning the nucleus ventralis intermedius (Vim), was the best treatment for tre mor [159,[185][186][187]. These results were replicated by others [181,187,188]. Also of note is the fact that Hassler et al thought they were operating on the thalamus at times but turned out to have lesioned the STN [184] linking once again the STN to MDs.…”

“…It includes most of the ventralis oralis anterior, the ventralis oralis posterior and the Vim nuclei as per Hassler's classifi cation [18] . The ventrolateral nuclear mass has been recognized since the early 1950s as the prime surgical target for the relief of tremor [19,20] . Nonetheless, wide variations in the recommended placement of the target have been reported [21] .…”
