A clickable NHC–Au(i)-complex for the preparation of stimulus-responsive metallopeptide amphiphiles

Abstract: We report the synthesis of an alkyne functionalised NHC-Au(i)-complex which is conjugated with amphiphilic oligopeptides using a copper(i) catalysed cycloaddition. The resulting Au(i)-metalloamphiphiles are shown to self-assemble into charge-regulated stimulus-responsive supramolecular polymers in water via a weakly cooperative polymerisation mechanism.

“…This is presumably due to virtual coupling in free PS 65 -NHC-Cu(I) (referred to non-immobilized polymers). Moreover, the chemical shift of N- 13 CAu-N of PS 65 -13 CNHC-Au is in the range of monometallic NHC-Au complexes, 58,59 NHC-AuNPs, 60,61 and NHC-Au clusters. 60,62 The upfield shift has also been reported previously when transferring NHC-Cu(I) to NHC-Au(I).…”

“…Moreover, the observed chemical shift of our PEG-NHC-Au complexes are in good agreement with literature values for other NHC–Au complexes. 70–72 We note that the signatures shown at 1.52 (H 7 ′) and at 4.01 ppm (H 9 ′) do not show cross-correlation with the C 2 center in the 2D spectrum, which can be attributed to the fact that they are positioned three bonds farther from the carbene center.…”

“…Stimulus-responsive amphiphilic polymers can form or reconstitute into various microstructures, including spheres, vesicles, lamellae, and other complex aggregates, , given a suitable external stimulus, such as light irradiation, , temperature, , pH, , enzymes, or redox conditions. , Over the last few decades, photoresponsive amphiphilic polymers have aroused considerable interest due to the relatively fast, remotely controllable, and versatile properties in the fields of nanocarriers, drug delivery, and cell imaging. …”
