A cladistic revision of the genusFredius(Crustacea: Decapoda: Pseudothelphusidae) and its significance to the biogeography of the Guianan lowlands of South America

Abstract: A revision of the cladistic analysis presented by Rodriguez and Pereira (1992) for the species of the genus Fredius Pretzmann, 1967 (Pseudothelphusidae), was carried out using additional species and new homologies to obtain a more robust cladogram. The tree obtained differs from the previous one in the clustering of species, but the area cladogram confirms a previous theory on the plausible evolution of the group in the Guianan lowlands of South America, between the Orinoco and the Amazon rivers. A new species… Show more

“…Hubert, Renno, 2006;Lima, Ribeiro, 2011). Similar conclusions were reached by authors working on other components of the Amazonian biota, such as plants (Cortés-B, Franco-R, 1997;Franco-Rosseli, Berg, 1997), other vertebrates (Cracraft, Prum, 1988;Eizirik et al, 1998;Marks et al, 2002) and arthropods (Grazia, 1997;Rodríguez, Campos, 1998;Camargo, Becker, 1999;Hall, Harvey, 2002;Morrone, 2002;Goldani, Carvalho, 2003;Nihei, de Carvalho, 2007). Basins adjacent to the Amazon, such as the Paraná-Paraguay, Essequibo and Orinoco share a large amount of taxa with the Amazon basin and even species whose closest relatives are Amazonian.…”

“…A cladistic and biogeographic analysis of the genus Fredius (Rodríguez & Pereira 1992, Rodríguez & Campos 1998 indicated that much of the group's evolution occurred in the Guayana region, particularly in hypothetical major basins comprising the present Orinoco, Essequibo and Cuyuni River Basins. Widespread species, such as F. reflexifrons and F. denticulatus, would have evolved in the nearby area of the Atlantic Guianas and the Amazon Basin.…”
