A cladding-pumped, tunable holmium doped fiber laser

Abstract: We present a tunable, high power cladding-pumped holmium doped fiber laser. The laser generated >15 W CW average power across a wavelength range of 2.043 - 2.171 μm, with a maximum output power of 29.7 W at 2.120 μm. The laser also produced 18.2 W when operating at 2.171 µm. To the best of our knowledge this is the highest power operation of a holmium doped laser at a wavelength >2.15 µm. We discuss the significance of background losses and fiber design for achieving efficient operation in holmium doped fibers. Show more

“…Holmium-doped fibers have been utilized in a tunable laser operating from 2040 -2171 nm [17], and in a high-Q cavity, a wavelength as long as 2210 nm has been reached [18]. A small-signal holmium-doped fiber amplifier (HDFA) has also recently been demonstrated operating at a specific wavelength of 2100 nm with a reported gain of 28 dB [19].…”

“…Various nonlinear MIR platforms for parametric processes at 2 μm have been proposed in recent years, taking advantage of diode-pumped thulium or holmium doped silica fiber laser [7,8]. To reference their efficiency as a guideline for platform selection, we show in Table 1 the figure of merit (FOM) defined as the ratio of nonlinear coefficient γ to attenuation coefficient α [18].…”

“…Recently, the potential of hollow-core photonic bandgap fibers 8 combined with thulium-doped fiber (TDF) amplifiers 9 for fiber optical telecommunication in the 1910-2020 nm band was reported. Furthermore, the 2-mm spectral range is also widely used to pump holmium-doped fibers 10 or to drive nonlinear processes in the mid-infrared region 11,12 . For most of these applications, a broadly tunable narrow linewidth laser source at 2 mm is required.…”

“…All-fiber core-pumped ring cavity TDF lasers (TDFL) exploiting fiberized grating-based filter 13,14 or Fabry-Pérot etalon 15 as a wavelength selective element and high-power cladding pumped holmium-doped fiber lasers 10 have been reported. Tunable sources based on parametric conversion and subsequent amplification in TDFs delivering more than 100 mW of continuous wave power while modulation capable were also recently demonstrated 16 .…”
