Previous stability analysis of low space charge ωe2/Ω2≪1, E×B drifting flows inside smooth anode cavities has shown that they are practically stable against slow wave ω/ck≪1 diocotron instabilities when the flow touches the cathode (cathode layer). It is shown here that the presence of periodically structured anode destabilizes cathode layer modes when their phase velocity matches that of an empty cavity eigenmode, as structured cavities support slow waves in vacuum. An analytic dispersion relation that self-consistently includes the structured anode effects is obtained in the guiding center approximation. The growth rate, related to the onset of magnetron oscillations, scales as γ/ω∼ωD/ω≃1/kd; it is independent of, and remains finite as, ωe2/Ω2→0. The most unstable frequency corresponds to a resonant layer below the flow surface (slightly below the Buneman–Hartree frequency) and the growth rate is found symmetric relative to the detuning from resonance.

Assuming the averaged (background) electron distribution in a crossed-field device, such as a magnetron or crossed-field amplifier, to be slowly varying between the cathode and the anode, we develop a WKB approximation for the cold-fluid plasma equations of a planar magnetron. In this approximation, we can give general expressions for the solution of linearized, high-frequency oscillations in such a device in terms of two integrals. Assuming also that the high-frequency wave in the slow-wave structure drives the response in the electron plasma, we are then able to show that the current drawn by a crossed-field device will be proportional to the power propagating in the slow-wave structure. Thus the device will operate as a linear amplifier. We also show, in the same approximation, that the averaged electron sheath that forms when the device is operating is independent of the current being drawn. Thus the current will not be limited by the sheath, but only by the ability of the cathode to emit electrons. In the process, we also obtain expressions for the linear growth rate and the value of the quasilinear diffusion coefficient at the diocotron resonance, in terms of parameters of the background electron sheath.

Purpose -Biotechnology is closely associated to microfluidics. During the last decade, designs of microfluidic devices such as geometries and scales have been modified and improved according to the applications for better performance. Numerous sensor technologies existing in the industry has potential use for clinical applications. Fabrication techniques of microfluidics initially rooted from the electromechanical systems (EMS) technology. Design/methodology/approach -In this review, we emphasized on the most available manufacture approaches to fabricate microchannels, their applications and the properties which make them unique components in biological studies. Findings -Major fundamental and technological advances demonstrate the enhancing of capabilities and improving the reliability of biosensors based on microfluidic. Several researchers have been reported verity of methods to fabricate different devices based on EMS technology due to the electroconductivity properties and their small size of them. Therefore, controlled fabrication method of MEMS plays an important role to design and fabricate a highly selective detection of medical devices in a variety of biological fluids. Stable, tight and reliable monitoring devices for biological components still remains a massive challenge and several studies focused on MEMS to fabricate simple and easy monitoring devices. Originality/value -This paper is not submitted or under review in any other journal.
