A chronological review of circularly polarized dielectric resonator antenna: Design and developments

Abstract: This article presents a chronological overview of circularly polarized dielectric resonator antennas (CPDRAs). This article provides a comprehensive review about innovation and rapid developments of CPDRAs over the last three and half decades since 1986s. The objective of this article is to highlight the basic concept of CP mechanism in DRA and state‐of‐the‐art developments of CPDRAs in terms of single and multi‐point feed for unmodified and modified DR geometries considering different types of excitation mech… Show more

“…Review papers on CP DRAs exist in the literature [29][30][31]. However, the authors in [29] summarized their general thoughts about DRA, the advantages, and a comparison of the recent techniques used to obtain wideband CP DRAs.…”

“…Whereas, in [30], the authors focused on the summarization of different techniques to generate a dual-band CP DRA only. Moreover, in [31], the authors summarized the basic concept of the CP mechanism for DRA in addition to the methods that can be used to obtain circular polarization in DRA. Previous review papers published in [29][30][31] summarized the methods of generating circular polarization in DRA and the advantages in general.…”

“…This theme was introduced in 1983 [1], and they have been widely studied and used owing to their attractive properties like small size, low ohmic loss, light weight, ease of excitation, wide bandwidth, and very high radiation efficiency in compared with planner antenna [2][3][4][5][6]. They are used in both linearly and circularly polarized systems [7][8][9][10][11]. Several methods for gain and bandwidth enhancement of the DRAs have been reported such as: using electromagnetic bandgap structure [12], using DRA in its higher modes [13], employing short horn around DRA [14], and using non-transparent conducting sheet as superstrate [15].…”
