Technological disruption enabled by the internet revolution has resulted in an exponential increase in the growth of new technologies and the resultant technology disruptions in the workplace. Disruptive technologies are changing the rules of competition in organisations. Most chief information officers agree that there could be significant value in utilising new technology to create a competitive advantage in an agile world; however, in practice, the adoption and implementation of newer technology occur relatively slowly. There is very little research on factors influencing strategic IT decisions from a perspective of disruptive technologies. The objective of this study was to investigate critical factors that guide strategic IT decision-making in an agile business context. Using a literature review, various factors that had an influence on strategic IT decision-making in organisations were identified. The factors were extended and confirmed with data from semi-structured interviews resulting in the Framework for IT decision-making and a model for the classification of IT systems, which provide CIOs with comprehensive guidelines to make strategic IT decisions in the midst of disruptive technologies.

The Impacts of Data-Driven Leadership in IR4.0 Adoption on Firm Performance in Malaysia

The primary purpose of this study is to develop a novel framework to explain the effects of data-driven leadership in IR4.0 adoption on firm performance. We proposed four dimensions for the data-driven leadership: (1) the experience of key personnel with IR4.0 adoption, (2) the appointment of a chief information officer (CIO), (3) the establishment of a technology committee, and (4) the acquisition of technology. This study includes 943 public-listed firms traded on Bursa Malaysia from 2015 to 2019. Using the random effects model (REM), our study shows that data-driven leadership in IR4.0 adoption, particularly the appointment of a CIO and the acquisition of technology, is positively associated with Tobin’s [Formula: see text] and market-to-book value of the firms. Subsample analysis reveals that data-driven leadership has greater significant positive impacts on firm performance in manufacturing-related firms. Further analysis also provides evidence that CEO duality and CEO age negatively affect the role of CIO in manufacturing firms. In contrast, CEO age and founder CEO negatively affect the role of key personnel fitted with IR4.0 experience in nonmanufacturing firms. However, founder CEO in nonmanufacturing-related firms which incorporated IR4.0 technology into the business could significantly improve firm performance. Lastly, there is a noticeable drop in performance when the boards are busy. Our study provides recommendations to both industry and government IR4.0 policy and contributes to leadership literature scholarly, particularly in the data-driven leadership viewpoint in both manufacturing- and nonmanufacturing-related sectors in the era of IR4.0.

Four Decades of Chief Information Officer Research: A Literature Review and Research Agenda Based on Main Path Analysis

Despite the relevance and maturity of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) research field, no studies exist that exhaustively summarize the current body of knowledge, focusing on the development of the field over its entire timespan. The paper at hand addresses this research gap and presents an exhaustive literature review on the CIO research field using main path analysis. We identify the central papers in CIO research and eight main research streams by quantitatively and qualitatively analyzing 466 papers. We find that established research streams, e.g., 'Evolving role of the CIO' and 'CIO hierarchical position and relationships' as well as recently emerging research streams, e.g., 'CIO as business enabler' and 'CIOs and IT security,' draw growing attention. Based on our findings, we develop promising further avenues for research in the CIO field.
